I remember it like it was yesterday; after all, the day I met Klaus Michaelson was the day my life changed forever. It was the year 1822; my parents were killed after their slaves rebelled and I had been sent to live with my uncle, Governor Teiran.
The coach jolts to a halt and the door opens slowly. My uncle is standing next to door, hand extended, I take it hesitantly.
"Welcome my dear Amelia. It's a pleasure to see you again. I hate that it's due to such unfortunate circumstances. I've had my servants draw a bath for you in the guest quarters; you must be exhausted after such a long trip." Indeed, I was. The four-hour coach ride was tiresome, and my silk dress clung to me as sweat dripped down my back.
"Alas you are right dear uncle," I kiss him lightly on the cheek as we walk up the stone pathway to the main house, "I do so appreciate you opening your home to me. I fear I do not know what would have become of me." The door swings open, and we are greeted by three people whom I have never seen before.
"Ah Amelia let me introduce to you to some guests of mine. This is Elijah, Rebecca, and Klaus. They have been keeping me company these last few months." I barely take note of them, curtsying quickly. Tired from the trip I ache to be rid of these troublesome clothes and to soak in some warm water.
"If you will excuse me, I've had a rather long trip." I start up the stairway behind a servant and overhear my uncle apologize to the guests on my behalf.
"You will have to excuse my niece; she has been through a troublesome time lately. There will be time for proper introductions later."
A few hours later there is a knock on my door. Sighing heavily, I step out of the bath, wrapping my robe around me before telling the unknown visitor to enter. I'm greeted by one of my uncle's visitors.
"I'm afraid I couldn't wait for proper introductions. The name is Klaus. Klaus Michaelson." My face turns red as I clutch my robe tighter.
"Well, Klaus, I dare say this is not the time for introductions. If you will see yourself out while I dress. This is terribly inappropriate." Klaus chuckles, taking another step towards me.
"Tsk tsk no need to get upset love. I just couldn't help myself; after all you are quite... unique, aren't you?" Klaus was referring to my bright, golden eyes. It was true after all. My mother and I were the only ones that I knew possessed them. My mother always said it was trait on her side of the family; it was definitely a source of speculation. Many feared we were witches... or worse.
"There will time for proper introductions. Coming into my room, unannounced and without a chaperone is quite unheard of. I do not know what kind of barbaric place you come from; but here there are rules and proper etiquette. I must insist that you leave, before I have you removed."
"Quite feisty aren't you. I don't like being told what to do and I will leave when I'm ready too." Klaus reaches out, grabbing my arm and pulls me towards him in a scandalous embrace. I didn't want to do this, but he has given me no choice.
"Fine. Have it your way. Don't say I didn't warn you." My eyes flicked to his hand, and it turned bright red, blistering immediately. Klaus jerked his hand back, a bewildered look on his face.
"Goodbye Klaus." I threw him out the door with a flick of my hand. He flies down the hallway and I slam the door behind him. My uncle was sure to give me a thorough lecture later about not insulting his guests and that we needed to keep our abilities hidden; but as far as I was concerned my want to live went up in flames the day my parents did. Let him run and tell people; I would take down more than one before they reached me.
