Sparkling, see-through waves rushed upon the shore, knocking into several people that swam in the water. The sun was slowly setting behind the horizon afar, the sky painted in streaks of orange and purple and pink. A rustling of light wind shook the vegetation slightly, just enough for the leaves to sway back and forth. It was calm and peaceful.
"What're you doin'?" A voice asks Joe, breaking him from his thoughts. She sits beside him on one of the other lounge chairs and relaxes back into the wicker setting, a book resting on her knees.
"Nothing," he says, his cheeks scrunched up to his eyes and his hand acting as a visor as he does his best to avoid the bright sun and look at his best friend. "How are you liking it so far?" he asks her and takes a swig from his beer bottle.
"It's... so much better than I thought. There is just so much love and life here on the island, so much culture," she praises while happily looking around the beach. "I don't think I ever want to leave," she jokes and Joe laughs.
"I know what you mean," he smiles.
Before their plane landed in Samoa, Joe was dead-set on not sparking up anything with anyone. He had a bad breakup with his ex-wife and he planned on staying single for quite some time. A year and a half have gone by and he still wasn't pushing himself into anything he wasn't ready for. However, it seemed like cupid had other plans.
With the love that [Y/n] shared with Joe about his culture and the history of his Samoan dynasty, he was slowly and surely falling head-over-heels for the woman and he didn't know how to stop it. Don't get him wrong, he was open to love. But it had to be right, it had to feel right.
It felt right with [Y/n], as if they were meant to be together on that Island.
His heart now fluttered with every smile she sent his way and he blushed whenever she teasingly flirted with him the same way they always had before. And the longer they stayed there, the longer she showed passion in what made him, him, Joe fell harder and felt stronger for her. He craved her now, unlike he ever had before. She wasn't just his best friend anymore, she was... much more to him.
[Y/n] used to be a side character in his story, just how any other best friend to the protagonist would be. She was dulled by their friendship and joe didn't realise how brightly she could shine until now. [Y/n] was now his front and center.
"The meal that we had at the smoked barbeque last night was beyond amazing," she smiles. However, Joe isn't listening to her. He is too focused on his heart hammering away in his chest and the burning drought in his throat. "Why don't you ever cook for me?"
"I-I need to tell you something," he stutters, nervous. Joe swings his legs over the chair and aims his gaze toward her.
"Okay..." [Y/n] laughs and places her book down on the table in between their chairs. "What's up?"
"I...I..."
"Joe, it's okay," she reassures him. "You can tell me anything."
"I'm in love with you," he blurts out.
His eyes grow wide as the words leave his lips and he stares at her, wishing for her to say something. Moments pass before she speaks up, her eyes full of confusion as they lock onto Joe's features, searching for any sign of humor. There was none.
"...What?"
"I'm in love with you," he repeats. "Say something, please," he begs.
"What am I supposed to say, Joe?" she asks breathlessly.
"Maybe that you feel the same?" He questions hopefully. "Do you? Do you feel the same?"
"I..."
