Sitting in one of the exam rooms at the doctor's office, Bobby randomly noted everything in the room. From the snow-white, brick walls to the tan, leather bed that she sat upon. Everything seemed clean and smelt of pine-sol and bleach.
Due to her job, Bobby was required to have a physical done as well as a regular check-up. Her boss wanted everyone to come back to work with a clean bill of health or else they'd be sent out unemployed. Bobby understood the woman's reasoning yet she thought it was a bit extreme to be fired for something out of your control.
The door swung open and a male doctor came in dressed in a white lab coat. "Hello, miss Milne," he greeted. His voice was deep, a little raspy. "I'm doctor Anoa," he said and shook Bobby's hand with his much larger one. He was pretty tall and it was obvious that he was fit and muscular as the sleeves of his jacket were tightly bound around his arms. "So, what brings you here today?"
"Nothing major, I guess. My boss just told me to come in and get a check-up done," Bobby explained. She tucked her hair behind her ear and stood up straight. "The nurse that came in before swabbed me for a couple of things."
"Okay, that's good. Let me just check your vitals and stuff here," he said and walked over to beside Bobby where he grabbed the otoscope from the wall.
He grabbed her earlobe and stuck the tool into her ear, checking her eardrum before moving over to the other ear. Throwing the plastic attachment away in the garbage can near the door, he put the instrument back on the wall mount and stepped toward the counter on the far side of the room.
"Everything looks to be good so far. I'm gonna go out and check if anything came back from those other tests. I'll be right back," he said before leaving the room and shutting the door.
Bobby thanked him before he left and the minute the door closed, she was on her phone and texting her best friend about the hot doctor. After a few texts from her friend saying how she needed to make a move, Bobby decided it was silly and unrealistic and put her phone back in her bag. He didn't even seem to be interested in her, so why would she embarrass herself?
Laying back on the uncomfortable bed, Bobby waits patiently for Dr. AnoaI to return.
______
"Okay," Dr. AnoaI says as he opens the door. Placing his clipboard down on the countertop, he turns toward Bobby and smiles. "Everything seems fine. However, I do advise a flu shot before you go."
"A shot?" Bobby asks. "Can't I just take like a pill or something?" She was beginning to get nervous. Her heart sped up at the thought of a needle coming anywhere near her.
"I'm sorry but no. You can only receive the vaccination by injection," he smiled apologetically. "I take it you have a fear of needles?" he asks. Just then a nurse wearing solid pink scrubs enters the room with a needle still wrapped in plastic in her hand.
"Try terrified," Bobby answered as the nurse filled the syringe with the liquid medicine. Dr. AnoaI stepped forward and grabbed Bobby's hand and squeezed.
"It's okay. I'll help you through it, alright?"
Bobby nods, "Alright."
The nurse wipes Bobby's arm with an alcohol swab and sticks the needle in, pushing the medicine into her arm and pulling it out. All the while, Bobby squeezes the doctor's hand tighter and tighter until she feels the bandaid is placed over the tiny hole. "Thank you," Bobby says.
"Thank you, Lisa," Dr. AnoaI says to the nurse as she leaves the room. "How are you feeling, Bobby?"
"Better now that it's over," she breathes.
"How 'bout I take you to dinner to make up for you having to get a shot?" he asks. When Bobby looks up at him he's biting his lip and staring at her.
"Yeah, okay," Bobby laughs. Dr. AnoaI writes down his number on a prescription pad and tears it off before handing it to Bobby.
"Text me your address and I'll pick you up tomorrow. How's six-thirty sound?" he asks.
