About a week later, at work, I walked in to the smell of sweets and coffee. Picking up my pace, at least as much as I could in crutches, I followed the smell to the kitchen. I found Ian standing by a variety of breakfast foods, organizing them into different baskets. He turned around to see me with a big smile on my face.
"What's the occasion?" I asked, nearing the table full of multiple treats.
"I just remembered what you said last week, and I thought 'why not get them today?'."
"Well," I leaned forward onto the table, holding the edge of it with my hand, "I almost died running over here."
"It's not my fault you get that excited over cinnamon rolls."
I scanned the surface of the table for drinks. All I spotted was fresh, steaming coffee.
"Did you get any other drinks?"
"What's wrong with coffee?" He said, keeping a smile from taking shape on his face.
"No, it's fine," I still greatly appreciated what he had done, "I'm just not the biggest fan."
He took a moment to let the smile tug at his lips as he watched me fight my disappointment. The fridge unlatched as he pulled on the handle, releasing cold air into the room. After sticking his hand in the fridge, he revealed a bottle of apple juice.
"How did you know!?" I grabbed the perfectly cold bottle from his hands.
"I just listen when you talk," he said gladly.
The rest of the cast came in, excited about the wonderful surprise breakfast. We quickly went through the coffee cake, French toast, and cinnamon rolls.
After munching on sweets and gulping down breakfast drinks, we got to work.
About half way through the day, after filming a couple videos, Eliza, one of the producers, introduced us to her nephew.
"Hey, guys, this is Carter," she put her hand on his shoulder.
He was one of those guys girls at my school would go crazy for. He was in good shape and had bleach blonde hair with overgrown roots. His honey brown eyes scanned the room before landing on me. I'm not going to say that I wasn't attracted to him. I don't think I would be a normal straight teenage girl if I wasn't. First of all, I didn't know any better. And second of all, come on.
"He's a senior in high school and is planning on majoring in Video and Photographic Arts, so he's going to be hanging around here for a couple months to work with the camera equipment and get some experience with it before college," she moved her hand off of his shoulder. "Just treat him nice, alright?"
"Alright," a few people said.
Eliza turned away, gesturing for Carter to come with her. Before following his aunt, he gave me a subtle smile. I smiled back nervously. My inner teenager was freaking out, but my smarter subconscious really hated that I was acting like this.
I heard a buzzing from behind me and turned around to see Ian declining a call. He had been dodging calls all day. I assumed they were from the same person; either that or he got an insane amount of robocalls.
We all then went to the kitchen for some lunch. I talked to Ian and the girls in the cast as I ate away at my turkey sandwich.
"So, Kate," Reese smiled, "are you seeing anyone?"
"Uh," I caught a glimpse of Ian, who was looking off in the distance, avoiding eye contact with everyone, "no. Why?"
"Just because Carter was totally checking you out."
