(a/n I don't know anything about basketball, or sport in general sorry. Also this fic includes christmas cause both donghyuck and mark are christian so sorry if it's not something you believe in or celebrate but I hope you can still enjoy 😊)

"Haechan!" Donghyuck whipped around to see Mark jogging up to him, engulfing him in a hug.

"What are you doing here, hyung?" Donghyuck giggled, returning the embrace.

"Just wanted to pick you up for a change, I haven't seen you since forever," Mark said, still not letting go. Donghyuck had just finished basketball practice, currently drenched in sweat so he was slightly uncomfortable with Mark clinging on to already clingy fabric. But of course he didn't mind, it was Mark, he'd honestly let him do anything to him. Well that, and for the first time in a very long time, Mark was more affectionate than usual which Donghyuck practically craved for constantly.

"Mark hyung, my man, we literally share three of our classes together, two of which I sit next to you in," Donghyuck rolled his eyes.

"I knowwww," Mark giggled, "but like outside of school I haven't seen you unless we're with the guys."

"Mm, fair," Donghyuck said, swaying them slightly as he got bored of the hold. Mark really wasn't planning to let go and while Donghyuck was appreciating it, he really needed to change out of his uniform. "Are you gonna let go of me?"

"No!" Mark practically squeaked, burying his nose in Donghyuck's shoulder. Hyuck laughed, tightening the hug slightly.

"Hyuck!" Lucas yelled, casually running up to them. Donghyuck could feel Mark stiffen slightly. He looked over slightly to him, furrowing his eyebrows. Mark had a hard stare on his face, glaring at the wall behind him. Donghyuck patted his back confusedly before returning his attention to the giant.

"What's up Xuxi?" Donghyuck felt Mark gulp and tighten his hold around his waist. He just hoped Mark couldn't feel his heart thumping away in his chest as he could. Hell he could slightly hear it.

"Ah just wanted to see if you're coming with us to get tteokbokki?" Lucas smiled. Donghyuck could see Mark roll his eyes as the elder turned to face Lucas.

"Actually," Mark spoke with a bitter undertone, grabbing onto Donghyuck's hand, "he's gotta go home soon so kindly piss off." Mark stormed toward the gym door, dragging Donghyuck with him. Hyuck turned around, yelling bye at Lucas as he stumbled from being pulled.

Mark swung the door open, gripping Hyuck's hand tightly as he pulled him toward his car.
"Mark hyung," Donghyuck murmured softly, snapping Mark out of his red eyed madness and letting go of Donghyuck's hand. "My bag..."

Mark stopped in his tracks, giving Hyuck a chance to catch up to him. "Right, uhh, I'll...I'll go get it," Mark fumbled with his keys, giving them to him then dashing off. Donghyuck turned, watching Mark run into the gym, laughing to himself. Donghyuck inhaled deeply, breathing a heavy sigh as he walked up to Mark's car.
"What the hell, hyung," he rubbed his wrist slightly, unlocking the car and getting in.

Donghyuck let his body slump into the chair. It had been an exhausting week and quite frankly he was more than ready for the weekend. And for the holidays approaching after next week. He could feel the Christmas bullshit in the air, what with the lights and decorated trees littering Seoul like the trash they were.

Donghyuck, as you could probably tell, hated the Christmas holidays, mostly because he was typically alone. For the two week break, everyone would be with their families, even Mark, who would fly with his parents back to Canada to be with his grandparents. Donghyuck would usually spend Christmas day rolling on the floor like the yule log he felt like, sometimes wrapped in fairy lights if he was feeling the Christmas spirit. Welp, it's not his fault that most years his parents were working on Christmas day, being flight attendants and all.

He was lucky though as Jaemin decided he wouldn't be going on his trip back to his hometown with his family this year and instead spend the small break with Hyuck. This year he wouldn't feel as much of a Scrooge as he usually did.

Donghyuck was snapped out of his woeful holiday thoughts as he heard the door close beside him, looking up to see Mark handing him his bag with a smile. "You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine," Donghyuck sat up, taking his bag on to his lap.

Mark started the car up, driving out of the car park of the school in silence. Donghyuck fiddled with the handles of his bag remembering his regular uniform inside, reminding him of his now dry basketball uniform he had on. He shifted slightly in the chair in discomfort, he really wasn't fond of basketball no matter how good he was, he just hoped that maybe Mark would watch one of his games and be proud of him. Which unfortunately hasn't been as often as he'd like.

Mark cleared his throat, gaining Donghyuck's attention. "Um, why...why do you call Lucas 'Xuxi'?" Mark asked, trying to be casual but a hint of sourness was laced through his word.

Donghyuck laughed, shaking his head, "cause that's his name? Xuxi is his birth name Mark." Hyuck's laughter got worse as he saw Mark's face drop in realisation, whispering "oh" under his breath.

"Guess I forgot," Mark shrugged, turning the car into an in road.

"At least you know now," Donghyuck nodded awkwardly, turning head to look at rushing street out the window.

A few moments of silence engulfed them. Donghyuck was fine with it, but he could feel Mark fidgeting slightly as he drove.

"What's wrong?" Donghyuck looked back at him. Mark looked briefly back at him before looking at the road, sighing quietly.

"Haechanie, are you and Lucas close?"

Donghyuck thought for a moment, a small pout forming on his lips. "I guess so, he's definitely the closest person I have that isn't from our...cult."

Mark chuckled but swallowed right after making Donghyuck slightly uneasy.

"But," Mark took a deep breath, "I'm still your best friend right?"

Mark pulled into Donghyuck's driveway, looking at him as he parked. Donghyuck noticed the small glint of hope, giggling slightly before taking a hold of Mark's hand.

"Of course," Donghyuck looked down at their hands, looking up after a moment, "soulmates remember?" he smiled. Mark breathed a sigh of relief, smiling back as he squeezed Donghyuck's hand momentarily.

"Yeah," he breathed out, staring into Donghyuck's eyes, "soulmates."

Donghyuck pulled his hand away slowly, looking away from Mark's gaze and coughing slightly. He could feel his face heating up and had to leave immediately before Mark caught on. He unclicked his seatbelt, mumbling a small "thanks" as he opened the car door.

"You're going to Jaemin's house tomorrow right?" Mark asked before Hyuck could close the door.

Donghyuck rolled his eyes, "I practically live there dude of course," he laughed. Mark giggled in response as Donghyuck closed the door, waving at him before he started the car.

Donghyuck watched as Mark pulled out of the driveway and drove off, dropping his bag on the floor. Donghyuck leaned on the pillar outside of his house, clutching at his chest. He closed his eyes before shaking his head, grabbing his keys from his bag. "Ugh, I need to stop." Donghyuck put the key in lock, pausing for a second and gulping.

"But am I a fool to occasionally believe in the myth of love?"
