"Haechan?" Mark asked, contorting his body toward Donghyuck as he held up the decorations, "can you bring the step ladder? I can't reach properly." Donghyuck got up from the floor, waddling over to the other side of the house to retrieve the step ladder.
Mark had come to Donghyuck's house after school only to find the horror of his undecorated home.
"Not even a week til Christmas and you haven't decorated?!" Mark had yelped in disbelief.
"My parents have been busy and I don't know how to put up half of this stuff," Donghyuck shrugged, thinking it was no big deal, but Mark shook his head with a frown. He dropped his bag on the floor, declaring he would personally decorate the house for Hyuck's family, pulling Donghyuck through the living room to find the decorations. It was now 8:30 and they had only finished the tree and half of the fireplace.
Donghyuck ran back with the step ladder, placing it in front of Mark before looking up at him with a big grin. Mark smiled fondly back, letting go of the decorations from one hand to ruffle Donghyuck's hair.
"Thank you, Hyuckie," he said, climbing up the step ladder to properly place some of the decorations on the wall above the fireplace.
Donghyuck sat back down on the floor cross legged, watching Mark in awe as he carefully strung the ornaments up. Mark then climbed down, setting the step ladder aside before continuing decorating the fireplace.
"Having fun down there?" Mark chuckled, semi acknowledging the lack of help he was receiving from Donghyuck.
"Very much so," Donghyuck said, leaning back on his hands, "it's a nice view."
Mark turned slightly, smirking at him, "nice view, huh?" He pretended to model as he decorated, posing stupidly for Hyuck's "viewing pleasures" as he added the decorations. Donghyuck grabbed one of the plastic baubles beside him, chucking it at Mark. Mark giggled in response, making Hyuck giggle as well, his cheeks tinting pink.
"What I mean is," Donghyuck breathed out, "it's really cool seeing you do this. Usually the house isn't decorated or my parents will do it when I'm not home so it's nice seeing this." Donghyuck smiled contentedly to himself. Mark paused briefly, turning his head to Donghyuck with a small smile. Donghyuck saw a faint glow in Mark's eyes before he turned, making him get slightly flustered.
It was nice seeing this. Mark decorating the house for Christmas as he watched. It felt calm and domestic and he loved it. He wished his life was always this peaceful and homely. There was a faint feeling of love in the air. Not the sappy, romantic kind, but the kind that made you feel safe. The love that felt like being wrapped in a weighted blanket while eating something soft and sweet. That warm, family kind of love was wafting through the house and into Donghyuck's skin and he loved it. Donghyuck wanted to drown in the feeling. Into the blankets. Into Mark's skin.
In a daze, Donghyuck stood up, walking over to Mark. He wrapped his arms around his chest from behind, letting his face rest on Mark's back. Donghyuck could feel Mark pause and turn his head but was too out of it to care.
"You okay, Haechanie?" Mark asked softly. Donghyuck turned his head so he could see Mark's face even slightly, still lying on his shoulders. Donghyuck hummed, nodding slightly before closing his eyes.
"Just wanted to hug you," he said in a small voice. Mark breathed out, Donghyuck already being able to picture his smile. He felt his finger lace through his own, raising his hand up gently. Donghyuck smiled softly as he felt Mark leave a small kiss on his hand. Donghyuck tightened his grip slightly as Mark let go of his hand, continuing to slowly decorate again, making sure not to move Donghyuck too much.
Donghyuck was beginning to drown in the love feeling properly when he heard the door click, managing to snap him out of his daze. Donghyuck pulled away from Mark, swallowing a bit and brushing his shirt down quickly before pivoting on his heels as the door swung open.
"Oh Hyuck! I thought you were going to be at Jaemin's or- oh hi Mark!" Donghyuck's dad came bumbling through the door, suitcase in hand.
"Appa!" Donghyuck walked over, hugging his dad, "wait I thought-"
"Got cancelled for another day, so next will be on the 24th," His father explained.
Donghyuck nodded. "Ah so definitely no Christmas..."
His dad ruffled his hair, "yeah, I'm sorry but I got to."
Donghyuck sighed but smiled nevertheless, "it's fine, I have a Jaemin this year."
"And a Mark!" Mark yelled from the fireplace, finishing his last touches.
Donghyuck laughed, "yes, and a Mark."
Mark jogged over to Donghyuck's dad, bowing politely. "Hello ajeossi," Mark said, smiling.
Donghyuck's dad smiled, patting Mark's shoulder.
"Hello Mark, you seem to be quite cheerful today," he chuckled, before glancing at the living room, "you also appear to be decorating my home." He raised an eyebrow while Mark's eyes widened, pursing his lips together.
"Ah...I'm sorry," Mark said sheepishly, looking down. Donghyuck's dad laughed, patting his shoulder again. "Ah it's more than fine, I appreciate it, thank you. There was a serious devoid of colour in this household anyway."
Mark looked up, smiling an awkward thin lipped smile before glancing nervously at Donghyuck. Hyuck stifled his laughter, no matter how many times Mark had come over, he was always awkward and shy around his parents. Seven years and Mark Lee would still rock back and forth on his feet whenever he saw Donghyuck's parents.
"Well I need to go upstairs to put this stuff down and whatnot," Hyuck's dad picked his things up, "Eomma home?" Donghyuck shook his head. "Dongyoung?"
Donghyuck furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, shaking his head again, "Still in Guri-si with Taeyong hyung."
"Okay so I'll be cooking for the...three...of us?" He looked to Mark, who looked to Donghyuck. Hyuck laughed, nodding his head. "Perfect, I'll see you both later." His father nodded, treading up the stairs to his room.
Donghyuck turned, going back to the living room, Mark following close behind him.
"How come Dongyoung hyung doesn't come home at all?" Mark asked, sitting down next to the boxes on the floor.
"I dunno, I can't control a married man," Donghyuck shrugged.
Mark furrowed his eyebrows as he began to unpack the box for decorations, "but...he's..not?"
"If it weren't illegal here, he would be," Donghyuck pointed out, Mark raising his eyebrows, nodding and mumbling "touché".
Mark paused his unpacking, "is this why you get a bit sad during this time of year?" he asked quietly.
Donghyuck looked down, biting the inside of his lip.
"I miss him sometimes you know," he whispered, choking slightly. Mark let go of the box, engulfing Donghyuck in his arms.
"Don't worry yeah?" Mark said, brushing his fingers through Hyuck's hair as the younger boy nodded sadly, "I'm always gonna be here for you."
"I'm always going to be here to hold you my sunshine."
