Shock was all I could feel right now. I looked out at my brother, who's look of hope had been replaced also with shock and...embarrassment. I felt my heart sink. Murmurs from the other tables filled the great hall with a soft buzzing sound.
"There's not a witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in Slytherin." I heard Ron Weasley whisper to Harry who was stood staring at me intently. I shuffled off of the stool, making my way to the cheering table at the end. The Slytherin Table.

It felt like everyone was staring at me, burning a million holes into my skin at once. I walked past the Ravenclaw table where Mable sat with an unchanged expression. I let my head fall, covering my face with my red hair, not wanting to be seen by her, scared that she would now hate me.

I felt a hand grab my arm softly, and my head shot up. Mable was looking at me with a small smile and a warm look in her eyes. "Your brother will come around, Val." She whispered before letting me walk on to take a seat on the Slytherin table.

At least I still had Mable. I barely looked at the Slytherin table before I sat down at it. I dragged my eyes up and caught hold of Draco's impressed grey ones, they quickly flashed away. Cedric was now sitting like a statue, like he was carved out of stone. I could barely tell he was breathing, he just sat stirring his potatoes around on his plate. I hoped what Mable said was true.

Before I could take in anything else around me, Dumbledore had started his speech, "I have a few start of term notices I wish to announce. First years please note that the Dark Forest is strictly forbidden to all students." Dumbledore's eyes flashed to the Gryffindor table and gleamed with a look of warning. "Also our caretaker, Mr Filch, has asked me to remind you that the third floor corridor on the right hand side is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to die a most painful death." We all looked back to where Dumbledore was gesturing and saw a grubby looking man with long hair and an even grubbier looking cat at his feet. I sniggered and turned back to Professor Mcgonagall and Dumbledore. "Let the feast begin." Dumbledore beamed at us all happily and with a wave of his old wrinkled hands, food of all variety appeared in front of us.

If I hadn't just let my entire family down, including my brother, I would have eaten till I burst but I could barely manage a few roast potatoes soaked in gravy. So I just sat in silence, swirling a half eaten potato around on my plate, letting my thoughts wander. I first thought of the meadow by our house in Devon, how we would go there every summer and have a picnic, Cedric and I played in the long grass all afternoon until our knees were red raw and our hands smothering in a cakey layer of dirt. And then I thought of Cedric, how excited he was when I got my letter and how he boasted that I would be in Hufflepuff just like all the other Diggory's before me. A snarky voice interrupted my thoughts.

"Picture that, the first Diggory to even set foot in the slytherin common room. Feeling proud are we, Diggory?" Draco Malfoy had moved in front of me with his two goons, he spat my last name out the same as he had the Weasley's.

"What's the matter Draco? Too scared to speak up without your bodyguards with you at all times?" I looked from Draco and his greasy blonde hair to the two gorilla-like boys on either side of him. This seemed to shut him up and he sank back in his seat, I really was not in the mood to deal with him.

It was some time later when the feast finished, Dumbledore whisked away the plates and told us to follow our prefects down to the common rooms. I hoped to catch Cedric on my way and talk to him but at the sight of me, he hung his head low and carried himself away so quickly that he was out of sight in mere seconds.

We followed the slytherin prefect around the school, and down multiple sets of steep stone steps. As we walked the light go darker and darker as if we were now underground. The walls crawled with dirt and moss but in a way it gave it character. We stopped infront of a large portrait of Salazar Slytherin himself. He was sat with a mean look on a large silver throne with a snake curled up on his lap, hissing frequently at everyone.

"Password." His voice echoed off the stone walls.
"Pure-Blood." The slytherin prefect recited, I felt my gut wrench. That's a little discriminatory.

The inside of the common room was almost as dark as outside in the corridor. A large, grand and black marble fireplace cast a warm glow on the furniture scattered across the room. Large sofas made of black leather and armchairs of emerald velvet sat around the fireplace with an elegant oak coffee table in front. A window on the far back wall was weirsly pitch black but as I got closer to it I realised it was a window looking out onto the black lake.

"Toilets are over there. Boys dorms are to your left, girls to your right. Get some sleep guys, classes start bright and early tomorrow."

So like with the rest of the girls, I filed into the girls dorms. Eight black poster beds lined both sides of the walls, their duvets made of a rich forest green silk and each bed had a small bedside table on it. I smiled as I caught sight of my owl, Pippin, sleeping soundly in her cage ontop of my trunk.

Us girls got changed very silently and very awkwardly. We each went into our beds, drew the curtains and changed in silence. The only sound to be heard was the sound of rustling clothew pr occasionally the girl on the end with the short black bob would giggle and twist her short hair around her finger, staring dreamily at the floor.

I finally decided that I may as well send an owl to Amos. He was sure to find out about me being placed in slytherin soon enough and I'd rather it be me to tell him. So I drew outa piece of parchment and took out my quill, pondering for minutes on what to say.

Amos,
If you've already heard then you know why I am owling you so quick, no doubt Cedric was the one to tell you, if you haven't then I'm sorry for what I'm going to tell you. I was placed in Slytherin. Not that I personally care, I just don't want to mark the family name. Besides that fact, I did meet a lovely girl. Mable Dankworth, she's in Ravenclaw. Anyways, owl me as soon as possible.
Yours truly,
Val

I slipped the letter into an envelope and sealed it and then tiptoed over to Pippin, tapping her cage and waking her up. Her amber eyes fluttered open and she screeched quietly at the sight of me. I let her out to stretch her wings and legs before leaving for the long journey. I tied the envelope to her leg carefully, she perched on my arm and I took her over to the window that she actually fly out of since the girls dorms where in a small tower coming off the dungeons. I nodded at her and she launched into flight. I watched until she was but a tiny dot in the distance and darkness devoured her.

I slipped into bed, closing my curtains and laying back. Slowly but surely I drifted off to sleep.
