That day began just like any other Friday, I awoke to the piercing light on my ceiling as my mother said "Rise and shine sleepy head!" But of course, like all mornings, I never want to. I stay in my bed for a minute before forcing myself to flop down onto my bedroom floor. I groggily stumble into the kitchen to fix myself cereal before school. Yes, I was a senior, but it still seemed like I was never going to escape that life-draining prison. Little did I know I would be leaving quite soon...
Like every morning, I eat, shower and head off to the bus stop, waiting five to ten minutes before the bus comes to pick me up. On every bus ride to or from school, I sit closest to the window and let myself get lost in thought as I stare out to the rural landscape in which I lived. My life wasn't bad, I mean I was fed, clothed and had a home, more than some people have. But what my life lacked was direction, I've always enjoyed making things yet I had no idea what I could make into a job.
That morning when I got off the bus at school, I ran into Nicholas Marxton, the second most terrifying student in my grade. One good thing about him however, is that you won't get trouble from him unless you ask for it, if you get on his bad side. In that case, being a virtual shadow is pretty good. But he has a tendency to stir up trouble for his own entertainment "Hey Xavier, I bet you feel pretty good about being a nobody, someone nobody talks with. It's peaceful, isn't it?" He said to me with the same grin he wore almost all the time, even when he's fighting other students. I knew he was just trying to antagonize me, get a negative response, most of the time I just ignored him, but today was different somehow. Nicholas felt like he was holding something back, this was usually his weaker kind of taunts he used in class sometimes just to bring others down.
But today was different, and little did I know that it would escalate very quickly with his next words. "Heh, no response, eh? I guess I could always go pay Priscilla a visit..." He said as his grin widened with an ecstatic look on his face, my anger rose immediately. "With my precious jewel..." He chuckled, pulling out a scarlet red pocket knife.
I snapped at that moment, Priscilla was probably my only friend, kind and thoughtful she was precious to me. She was the one to brighten my day every day at school, in art, government, and human anatomy, not only then but even at lunch, she was the only one to sit with me. The thought of her getting hurt made me lose it, even though I knew he just said it to get me to fight, I didn't care. It wasn't out of his character to stab a fellow student without a real cause. "BASTARD!!!" I roared as I charged at him, no weapons but my fists. He just laughed "Ha, that's it, Xavy!" As he readied his switchblade. I knew his first move, an upward diagonal slash and dodged to his left before striking his side as hard as I can, it was at least enough to stun him.
What happened next was something no one ever sees coming, a sudden series of loud pops sounded from the nearby history classroom, silencing the entire hall and halting our fight. Then, it seemed like an eternity of silence before the door slowly creaked open, revealing the horrors held within. The horrific bloody figure who stepped out was the most terrifying student in my grade, a psycho who never had a reason in their attacks, attacking students and faculty, Kody Ambrosium. Even though he was notorious for this, it was never as bad as that day, for it was when he snapped. I could see it in his eyes as he walked out of the classroom with his sadistic smile and pistol in hand.
His face was unnerving, freezing me in place as he turned and looked me in the eye; I could hear his hair-raising laugh before he even did it. "Ah, good shot, Xavy..." Nicholas chuckled as he recovered and saw Kody. "Heh, you finally cracked Kody. I knew it was just a matter of ti- " A shot was fired directly through his chest at that moment, Kody's shrill laughter ringing through the halls along with the screams of terrified students. Nicholas collapsing on the ground was unreal; this couldn't be happening was my first thought at the moment. I couldn't accept the situation as I was seeing it, and it got me killed, Kody fired four shots into my body, two in my chest, another grazed my throat and the final one landed in my femeural artery. All shots were critical, draining my body of all blood as I lay on the ground with no feeling but pain and coldness. The sound of gunshots sounded as though they were getting farther away as my vision darkened into pitch blackness.
My last thought was a single word, Priscilla.
