The walk to the loop entrance was calm. Once I made it out of the trees, I arrived on a small strip of sand and a beautiful view of the ocean. The water was calm and the sun was setting on the horizon. Flocks of birds flew around, screaming playfully at each other. It was perfect.
I finally made it to the cairn that housed the loop entrance. A magical feeling washed over me as I traveled back in time. Stepping out of the entrance, I was greeted with the view of the Children's home. Unlike the bombed ruins that Jacob would've seen, this house was fully intact and thriving. At that moment I knew that I fulfilled Grandpa Abe's wish. I was in 1943.
The walk to the door was slow. I took the time to admire the scenery and compare what I'm seeing now, to what I saw before I entered the loop. The grass was green, the sun was out and I'd say it's around mid-day. This was a stark contrast to the cool late afternoon present back in 2019.
The walk wasn't just to take in the view. It was also to calm my nerves. I was finally going to meet the people from Abe's past. The beautiful Miss Peregrine and all her children are there, right behind those walls. I could feel the excitement and nervousness pulsing through my veins. Would they like me?
When I reached the front entrance, I cautiously grabbed the brass knocker and knocked three times. Toc, toc, toc. After a couple of seconds, the door opened, revealing the figure of Miss Peregrine.
"Hello? How may I help you?"
"Um, hi. My name is Kayla Portman, Abe's granddaughter. I believe you saw us on the ferry earlier today."
"Alma Peregrine. Pleasure to meet you Miss Portman."
She stepped back and started walking inside. Unless I wanted to stand at the door like an idiot, I had no other option but to follow her. Miss Peregrine led me throughout the house that I always dreamed of visiting when I was younger. The big open rooms, the wallpaper, the crown molding and old furniture. It was everything I've ever thought of and more.
I was brought into the kitchen, where I saw a tall redhead teenager boiling tea with her bare hands. Olive, the pyrokinetic. Suddenly, the kettle let out a high pitched shriek and Olive took her hands off of the kettle. She immediately took out three cups and began to pour the tea into them. Olive took a cup and scurried out of the room and up the stairs.
Breaking the moment of silence, Miss Peregrine began to speak to me. "Miss Portman, I'm assuming that Abe told you about our world but I'm curious to know the extent of your knowledge."
"Well, for starters, I know about the 24 hour time loop thing and that we're forever stuck on September the 3rd in 1943. I know that everyone in this loop has a different peculiarity. Like that girl who made us tea, Olive. My grandpa told me about everyone in loop. He also used to tell me about the monsters. The Hallowghasts and the Wights. How they were failed immortality experiments and they hunt other peculiars. One of those monsters killed my Grandpa."
"Very good Miss Portman. It seems that Abe told you a lot more than I expected him to. By any chance, do you know what your peculiarity is?"
Looking down, I tried to prevent the onslaught of haunting memories. "Grandpa told me that I'm a bi-peculiar. I am an Ymbryne and I can see the monsters."
I looked up into Miss Peregrine's calculating eyes. She unexpectedly turned and briskly walked towards the back garden. I had to run through the house to catch up to her. I wondered what it was that I said that could have caused such a strange reaction. When I finally caught up, she glanced up at me before talking in a hushed tone.
"You know Miss Portman, bi-peculiars are extremely rare. Nevermind being just a normal Ymbryne. You mustn't tell anyone of this. Not even those who you trust the most."
"Why is it so important that I keep myself a secret?"
"You will be hunted down by the Wights. Bi-peculiars are very powerful syndigrasti. You are a very powerful syndigrasti. That is, if you learn to control your gifts. I will try to teach you as much--" She stopped talking mid-sentence when a tiny blonde came bounding in view. Fiona, my mind supplied. Miss Peregrine looked down at her pocket-watch. "Fifty-two seconds late Fiona."
"Sorry Miss Peregrine. How many carrots will you need for dinner?"
"One will do."
Intrigued, I watched as Fiona ran into the middle of a dirt patch and knelt onto the ground. She extended her arms and closed her eyes in concentration. The ground gave out tiny trembles and a giant carrot started to emerge. She stood up and looked into the distance, as if she was waiting for someone.
A little girl, no older than ten, ran up to the carrot and took it by the stem. She yanked the carrot out of it's dirt prison and dragged it into the house. My mind identified her as Bronwyn, a child with enhanced strength to match those as ten grown men. I also recalled her older brother, Victor, who's as strong as eleven.
We continued along the little path in silence. Miss Peregrine led me into a small clearing where a little girl robed in pink and two masked ballerina twins were playing on a seesaw. Hopping off the contraption, the twins grabbed a teddy-bear and started to fight over it. Miss Peregrine calmly walked over to them, took the bear out of their hands and ripped it in half, causing the twins to grunt in excitement.
The little girl came skipping over to me and exclaimed, "Hi! I'm Claire! What's your name?"
"Hello Claire! I'm Kayla."
With that, she ran back to her now content friends and joined them on the seesaw.
Further down the path, there was a boy in a bee-catcher's outfit and a pile of floating clothes. I presumed it was Hugh and Millard. They were playing a little game of football and were using a tall dinosaur topiary as a goalpost. Their referee was a blonde teen overdressed in a dapper suit and a top hat. He came up to me and introduced himself as Horace.
As Miss Peregrine and I walked back to the house, I couldn't help but wonder where the other children went.
