I don't know how long I've been in here. I don't know why I'm still here. I keep trying to get away, each day after I scratch a tally mark in the wall. It doesn't take me long before I am dragged back to my cell.
I run over to the window and look outside, wondering where Dylan and Hope and Seraphina are. I keep praying for them to return to me.
But of course, I know now I'm alone, and they could very well be dead, or hurt or something. I just want to see them one more time. Before they take my wings from me. Before they make me one of them.
"Please, let me go," I whisper as a man comes into my room and checks my temperature, then he hums and hands me a juice box.
"I'm sorry, Anya Lee," he says. "But you know I can't. I'd love to let you go, but if I do let you go, that could be bad for me."
I look at him, then I take the juice box, sipping some apple juice. He smiles warmly at me. He's very kind-looking and seems to be very caring. The man sits down in a chair with wheels and looks at me.
"I'm sorry about this, Anya Lee," he says. "If I had a say in this, I would let you go in a heartbeat. You deserve to be with your family, not locked up here."
"Then please just let me go," I beg him. ''I won't tell anyone, I swear, just please let me go."
He sighs. "I'm sorry ... I can't."
He stands up and leaves. I sigh and roll over on my other side, and close my eyes. I feel like I'm exhausted, and the windows in my cell are far too thick for me to get out. I wish they were so thick, I couldn't see out of them, but unfortunately, I can see the outside world.
It's maddening ... this whole time, I have been sitting in here, not trying to get out of this place. I open my eyes, sit up, and I look out the window close to my bed. I look out the window for a while, praying to see specks on the horizon... praying to see Dylan and Hope returning to me.
The door opens and in comes Tarlok. He folds his hands in front of himself, and he smiles.
"Are you ready?"
To escape? Yes.
I don't say anything as they cuff my arms behind my back, and we descend into the courtyard below. And I see Navara and Ellis, the traitor, and a knot forms in my stomach. Ellis smiles at me and she gives me a brief hug.
I headbutt her in the head as hard as I can, and she is actually knocked out. I whip around and slam into Navara before he can stab me again. I am grabbed from behind and then I slam my head into their face.
"Ah! Bitch!" cries the man.
I run over to the fence line, but then something sharp pricks in my arm. I yelp and my legs turn to jelly, and I collapse.
"Anya Lee!" someone yells.
"Dylan?" I say, but it comes out more like a slur. Then, everything goes black.
