I looked down at my phone. I had a text from my mother.

Here.

"Hey, my mom's here," I said to my boss, Delilah. I had about two minutes till my shift was over. "You want me to count the drawer?"

"Nah, we're staying open a bit later today. They new hours have started this week. We'll take care of it. Have a great day!" she smiled hugely as I waved goodbye and walked to the door.

"BYE MACY!" I shouted to my other boss, since she was in the back room and didn't know I was leaving.

"Bye, Carolyn, have a great rest of the weekend! Tell Diana I said hello!" she exclaimed as she poked her head out from the back room to flash me a grin.

"Yeah tell her I said hello, too. And your dad, Randy, too!" Delilah said.

"Sure thing," I promised as I waved goodbye and opened the heavy wooden door.

I smiled. They are such lovely people.

So, my name is Taylor Carolyn Duncan, but I go by Carolyn because I don't like the name Taylor. My birthday is November 21st, and today is the 17th. I'll be turning 18 in just 4 days! My parents are Diana and Randy Duncan and I have 3 siblings. Kate is 14, Adam is 11, and Julianna (whom we call Anna for short) is 8.

I got in the van and started to put my headphones in but my mom started talking to me before I could.

"How was your day?" she asked casually as she turned.

"It was good. Delilah and Macy said hi," I muttered, trying to get her to shut up so I could listen to music.

"Awesome," she said without enthusiasm. See, my mom can be somewhat of a douche. She has "friends" but talks about them behind their back and just doesn't even act like a friend to them. This pissed me off so I just rolled my eyes and put my headphones in.

After The Mortician's Daughter by Black Veil Brides was over, I went to turn on Devil's Night by Motionless in White but my mother pulled one of my headphones out.

"Taylor, don't ignore me," she said sternly. I again rolled my eyes. My parents never called me Carolyn, even though I constantly insist that they do so.

"Sorry," I mumbled and took my headphones out.

"It's fine. Now, what do you wanna do on your birthday?" she asked.

"Well, there's a Motionless in White concert in Ohio on my birthday..." I began, in a hopeful voice.

My mother interrupted with a laugh. "Yeah right," she said between chuckles.

"Yeah, I didn't think you'd take me. You know, even though we live in Indiana-- right next to Ohio," I said in an angry sarcastic tone.

My parents don't really understand me. They don't understand why I love the music that I love or why I dress the way I do or do the things I do or say the things I say. Partially, the reason is because I haven't explained it to them, because I don't want them to know. That's just a conversation I don't want to have. But most of the reason is because they just think I'm a freak and they just don't open up their mind to it. They always tell me how stupid and gay all the bands I listen to are. My dad says Kellin Quinn sounds like Demi Lovato. I just don't understand why they can't accept me, but it's whatever. I've learned to deal with their judgmental remarks and weird looks and pointless lectures. They just don't understand that I will not change who I am.

I stayed lost in my thoughts until we pulled into the driveway.

My mom turned the van off and I took off towards the front door. As we walked inside, my mom said "Shit. Hey, I put the ice cream out in the garage fridge. Will you bring it in here? I'll get everyone from upstairs so we can have this little party," referring to my birthday. Apparently, they had planned a little family party while I had been at work.

"Sure," I mumbled as I threw all my stuff on the couch and went to the garage door.

I turned the cold door knob and went to turn on the light. As I reached for the light, I felt something grab my hand and I heard a chorus of "SURPRISE!"
