There was something hauntingly beautiful about the boy from the village, but I could not place where I had seen his face before. He looked so familiar but so distant. He was the only thing on my mind as a palace guard galloped into the center of town. All the people followed his suit by gathering in a large circle around him.
"Attention all, there is a royal announcement from the Palace." his voice booms. "A letter from Prince Ashton; my deepest apologies but I am unable to visit your village anytime soon. War is possibly on the horizon and I need to be with my men preparing for battle. I hope you are understanding of my situation. Your future ruler, Prince Ashton." With that the palace guard leaves.
The villagers grumble among themselves, upset that this Ashton guy has postponed another meeting with them. Victoria seems to be acting like the message is no chip off her shoulder, but I could see how her shoulders slumped a little at the news. It did seem that he had a valid reason for not being with them but at the same time with all the talk, it seems as though this isn't the first event that he has cancelled.
"Who needs stuck up princes anyways." I joke nudging Victoria's side.
"They're not all stuck up." a voice interrupts.
I look towards the source of the voice trying to find the owner of it, only to see the same boy from before moving slowly in our direction.
"Well if he knew that war was being waged he could have given the village a little more notice."
"Yeah, I guess that was kind of dumb." he mumbles quietly, almost as if he were talking to himself. Just then another blond boy appears from the crowd. He was dressed in a cloak covering most of his body as well. Why are they being so secretive? I have every intention on figuring it out.
"I'm sorry, we have to go now." the new boy says. The other boy simply nods and turns back to me with a sad expression in his eyes.
"Before we part, I must ask what your name is."
"Amelia, and you are?"
"A- it's not important. Until next time my sweet Amelia." he does a slight bow and disappears with the new boy down an alleyway.
Well that was odd, then again my dreams don't seem to make sense most of the time. What I thought would be my last encounter with the strange boy would prove to be anything but.
A few days later, I am sprawled on the edge of the fountain in town, reading a cheesy love story. The main character is about to kiss the boy she's been dreaming of when a voice startles me.
"What ya reading there?" an over-enthusiastic male voice asks. So caught up in my book and not my surrounding, I fall into the fountain. The shaggy blond haired boy sits on the edge of the fountain in a fit of laughter. My temper gets the best of me, and I grab the back of his white shirt, pulling him in after me. The flustered look on his face causes me to laugh so hard I grab my sides.
"Oh two can play at this game." he smirks splashing water at me.
"It's on blondie!" to which I make my best attempt to splash him back. In the end we're both laughing so hard we have to stop to catch our breath. He clamours out of the fountain and holds a hand towards me.
"Well played Amelia, well played. It's nice to see a girl finally take up her own fight instead of playing damsel in distress."
"What's wrong with being a damsel in distress? Don't get me wrong every girl should stand up for herself when they can but they shouldn't feel bad for asking for help when they need it either."
"Whoa slow down I meant nothing by it."
I ignore his hand and climb out without any help. He rolls his eyes toward me.
"Really? You're going to act like that? You had so much potential too."
With that I walk off not bothering to look back. Who did this guy think he was acting like he was so high and mighty? The nerve of some people. I find Victoria outside the book shop, wiping the dust off the window sill. She sees me coming and automatically stops what she was doing.
"You look like you could use a walk."
Thus we set off on the path carved through the forest. We walk in silence for a long time, just comforted by each other's company. When we had reached the meadow, we stop and sit in the tall grass.
"Are all people here assholes?" I question.
"Sadly, but just ignore them. You need to do what makes you happy."
"Victoria, what makes you happy?"
"Well there's this one guy who I've occasionally met in the meadow, but it would never work out. He's nobility and I'm a book keepers daughter."
"And also a bad-ass." I add making her laugh. "You never know, love always finds a way."
"I guess you're right. Come on, we should head back as sunset is approaching."
