A short story! This is about a girl I met on my first day. Our teacher introduced everyone in our class to each other (we didn't know each other because it's sort of a homeschool co-op. It's not actual school), and then told us to write a short story, from the prompt she gave us, about someone we met just then (in thirty minutes). This was difficult for a few reasons. One, I didn't have much time. Two, I had only met this girl like twenty minutes before, so I didn't know much about her. Three, I'm really bad at keeping my short stories short. But I did it!

(I'm changing her name for privacy's sake, even though I'm pretty sure no one I know is ever going to see this.)

Here we go!

Taking a deep breath through her nose, Lia's eyes opened with shock. The air around her was not what she was used to at all. Though she had long dreamed of becoming a detective and going on daring adventures, she had not expected something so strange and mysterious to happen to her so soon. Nothing could have prepared her for the shock of waking up in a strange field, sheep roaming around her like her appearance was a normal occurrence.

"Where am I?" Lia asked, standing up and looking around in bewilderment. "What...?"

Sheep?

A field?

The middle of absolute nowhere?!

But that wasn't all. Her normal clothes were usually, well, normal. This... this was not normal. She had on stiff brown pants and a strange white shirt. Tools were hanging from a belt around her waist, and, looking around, Lia could see a full backpack on the ground next to her.

A low rumble interrupted her scattered thoughts.

Wait. A rumble? In a sheep pasture? Where was the sound coming from?

After a second, she realized it was coming from overhead, getting louder and louder every second. In only two minutes, she could see a small speck in the air, getting slowly closer. She realized, with a joyful start, that it was a helicopter!

Lia bent over her backpack, digging through it in desperate hopes that... yes! A white hanker-chief! Jumping back on her feet with a start, she waved the cloth in the air, hoping, hoping, hoping, that the helicopter was either there for her, or would see her and stop. Judging by the looks of the fields around her, it would be a very long walk to civilization.

An intense, almost tortuous, minute later, Lia saw the helicopter turn towards her, landing slowly after another few minutes.

She grabbed the backpack and raced to the copter, feet and face full of joy.

Finally.

Safe.
