Similes, Metaphors, and... Better Writing?

The first thing that happened in class was eliminating the word, "very". We can't use it anymore in our writing.  So below are some words to use instead. For example, instead of "very scared", use terrified. Instead of "very mad", use furious. Never use two words when you could use one. It's "very bad". ;) Haha, just kidding, it's horrible. Terrible. No good. Bad!

Next, we learned a bit about similes and metaphors. It's likely you know what they are, but in case you don't, below is the definition and some examples we wrote in class.

Simile = like/as

Metaphor = minus like/as

Similes:

The playdough was as liquid as lotion.

The house was as full as the moving truck had been.

The computer was like a diary of her life.

Metaphor:

Caring was a curse.

The judges were debating madly.

Accomplishing the feat was winning the prize, and winning the prize meant going home.

Next we had to make a plea. In four sentences, we had to convince a family member/lover to stay. They're about to leave on a ship and never come back, and we needed to convince them to stay with us. Heads up: it's super cheesy. It was supposed to be dramatic, and we were also supposed to use some similes and/or metaphors. So I'm sincerely sorry for the cringy-ness you're about to read. Ok! Now that the explanation is longer than the actual plea, here you go!

"Father, please, I need you! I need you like the earth needs the sun, like the grass needs water, like a ship needs a calm breeze. You think I can just go through life without you, always remembering the lessons you taught me at every turn, always remembering little things you showed me or helped me do? No indeed, Father, and I need you to tell me I won't have to."

Yeah. Horrible. I can't even read it.

Lastly, a story. But not in the way you're thinking.

At the end of class, we had a little extra time left. So I asked my teacher to review some of my story. (My fanfiction.) She read some of it, the Gisela short POV, for those of you who are reading my Unlocked KOTLC fanfiction, and she said it made her want to keep reading. She also said, when she reviewed the next chapter, that I had real talent. That I might even be past where she could teach me anything. (This is a co-op, so the class I'm in is an I think 7-9 grade level.)

And honestly, I agree. I'm pretty good with wordplay and character development and grammar, but I'm really bad with plot and world-building and description and things like that. Point being, I want to get into more advanced classes. I really do want to be an author when I grow up, so... I need more, better info.

So, my question to you is, do you know of a more advanced writing class? Online, because I doubt we live in the same area lol. If you have any suggestions, please, please tell me. Thanks!

And thanks for reading! Please vote and comment.
