I woke afraid. I have many nightmares and were used to them but they still scared me. It was still dark outside so I tried to fall back asleep to no avail.
So I just stared out through the small window that was across the room watching the sky brighten and the stars one by one disappear. Eventually light reached the inside of our prison. Soon most of the other Nekos around were awake as well. We never talked as we weren't allowed. If we did we'd usually get whipped and nobody wanted that over talking.I scanned the room, noticing all the details I had seen the past 3 years I'd been here. Nothing had ever changed in that time. Still dark. Still dreary. Still lonely. That's what I hated most, having only myself as company. Even though I hated talking I wanted to. Our cages were small and nobody knew different, all waist height for the average standing human and just wide enough to stretch.
Suddenly, I was stolen from my own thoughts as the basement door bashed open and the owner of the shop we were in came sluggishly down. He was always like this, probably trying to get over a hangover. He passed all of us and went to the back room. 'Yes! Finally' it was feeding time. We hadn't been fed in a day which wasn't un-normal but still was a good day. He came out with a great bag of food. I imagined myself devouring the whole thing. He went up and down the rows feeding each cage but sometimes missing some, either because they were empty or he rationed them so he didn't have to spend much on food. I was worried he would skip me.
Luckily, though he didn't and I ate some and paused because I saw eyes burning into the back of my head. I look up and see my cage neighbour look hungrily at my food with a desperate look on his face. He'd been skipped. Although I didn't know him I gave him the rest of my food because I knew what it was Lomé being in that situation. He looked so happy while he ate, it was a nice feeling.
