Hope

Benji's POV

I awoke to the smell of autumn leaves crushed. I recognised it. I saw only darkness still as my eyes refused to open. I felt no fear or pain. Serenity. Where was I? What has happened? Am I dead? After about 5 seconds, I heard an exhale of breathe and forced my eyes open to a sight I wouldn't believe. It was my Mother. My heart jumped. My empty tear ducts clenched trying to release what it had. I was in a bed, my old bed. My mother sat at the edge with a gleaming smile shone at me. She was slowly stroking my back, soothing me. A small window allowed the autumn light to tint the room orange. Around me was our old house, it was smaller than I remember though. You could touch both walls by just spreading your arms. It was one room with everything in it: bathroom, kitchen, bedroom. Everything barely worked but worked.
"Morning Honey!" My mother said.
Her voice brought so much joy I had been starved of for so long. My eyes were hurting but my smile only grew. I couldn't feel my tail slowly sway against the thin mattress.
"Morning Mum" I jumped up and hugged her tightly. I didn't want to release ever again.
Her golden hair gave me that same nostalgic smell.
"Oh Honey, I missed you too" As she wrapped me in her arms too.
"You've grown, and your so adult like now! Your a big boy now." She exclaimed.
"I know. Where have you been? Why did you never come back?" I frantically asked.
Her face dropped. No motherly smile could be seen now.
She grabbed both my hands and held them tightly.
"I love you Honey but I don't have much time. I need to tell you to keep fighting, I see where you're going and you're on the right path, you've just got to keep at it. I know it's hard to think but you must. For Leo" She ignored my question.
I was confused.
"What? Where have you been? And how do you know about Leo?"
"Honey" She stroked my hair behind my ear. "I never left your side and I never will. I'm always near you so I know everything that's happened, I know about Leo and everything else. I'm so sorry I couldn't save you from this but He will."
"What? How- Who's he?" Too many thoughts we're trying to escape my mouth.
"Leo!" What? How can he save me?
"I'm sorry my love but I must go now. I love you dearly and I will always be near you no matter what." Before I could say anything she kissed my forehead and ran out the door, I swear she faded away rather than left though. I blinked and everything was gone.

I was back? Back in the dreary basement, back in pain, back in hell. I must of passed out. I slowly scratched upright seeing the same expressions as before. Boring and unsafe. The crumpled cage lay lifeless in the corner. There wasn't a colour, just grey. Until I looked down and saw a red puddle under me. I jumped back. Pain immediately hit me as I fell back down. I screeched. Both because of the pain and the blood puddle on the ground in front of me. I crawled into a corner looking at it. It slowly swallowed my bodies impression had left. My side was covered in it. I was terrified of who's it was. The pain was still searing through my foot. I looked at it and saw it was black and blue and highly swelled. I squeezed at my ankle trying to suppress the pain but nothing worked. Suddenly pain starts aching in my back, I felt the pain and felt the open wound I had gotten from the cage earlier, or yesterday? It all came back now.

I remembered what had happened. What I had to suffer, again. I held my knees and pulled them close to my naked body trying to regulate my body heat as much as possible. I knew I just had to suffer with the pain for now. Those creatures up there won't want to help nor do I want them to. The pain only got worse as the night must've fell as the temperature dropped. My thin clothing before only helped dull the chilling wind but now I didn't have that, I was freezing, shaking in fact. However, my thoughts were not on that. My thoughts were on my dream, I think? Was it a dream? I was thinking back to the wonderful memories I had before all this happened. It was simpler and better despite the poverty me and my mother lived it but it was still better as we had love for each other and that was 'riches no money can buy'. My mother used to say that all the time. She always said it with a smile. She was always smiling, except when she has to leave in the evening after dark. She never told me why she didn't smile or why she had to go. I remember a week before my 14th Birthday, she went out like usual after buying the ingredients for the cake and I would guess presents as they were found later and she never returned. I still don't know why? I've never seen her again. Except today. I miss her. Why was she talking so confusedly though? What did she mean she never left? What did she mean I had to be strong until Leo saves me. How can he? He's... dead. He's dead.

I kept trying to rack my brain, trying to work out what it all meant but the pain was off-putting. I couldn't focus. Nor could I sleep so I just sat there, in complete silence once again and waited. I can never tell how long but I must of been a long time as the room had started to heat up again and the creatures upstairs were on the move. I was ghostly quiet hoping they might forget I exist but my stomach had other ideas. How I could be hungry after yesterday's ordeal, I don't know but I was. But, like I did with the other pain, I ignored it. And waited. Waited until Leo saves me I guess? I chuckle at the irony.

Hope you enjoy the happier tone, trying to contrast the previous's ones depressing ness. I'm hoping a few of you have worked out what's happened here, if you haven't with any of it, sorry but all shall be explained in further chapters. I hope you don't hate me too much for the cliffhanger I've left you on. Also, sorry for not updating for a while, just into GCSES now so they're being a bitch and I'm working with them. Sorry.
