Jacinth embers of the setting sun peeked through the bare trees, guiding you. The crisp, chilled air from the fall atmosphere nipped at your cheeks and nose.
The only thing that could be heard was crows cawing in the air, and the crunching of dry soil as the five of you walked down the forest path.AJ and Clem were the lead. Louis had made it very, annoyingly, clear that they stayed at least five feet apart from you three. You also had your weapons out, while theirs was kept hidden. You and Violet argued that the extra guard was unnecessary, but Louis threatened to turn back if you hadn't at least pulled them out. So that's what you did. Weapons were held at your side. Now all you had to do was aim if anything came at you.
The two kids ahead of you could be heard having a conversation.
AJ was complaining about walking too much, now that they won't be having a car, "-my feet are gonna bleed again!"
"Then we'll cut up a shirt and tie them up if we have to." Clementine resolved, a hint of irritation sounded in her voice.
You felt worse and worse about kicking them out. Your gut felt like knots were forming as it grumbled with anxiety.
"It's not so bad." Louis tells the two. Clementine looks back at him and glares, not once faltering as she continues walking. Her eyes were like daggers.
Louis stammers, "I-I mean, you've done this before."Now it was your and Violet's turn to give him a displeasing look.
He thought maybe at least one of you would back him up, so he makes an awful attempt at trying to save himself, "probably pretty good at it by now.""Don't pretend you give a shit." Clementine snapped.
Louis finally gets the hint and looks in a different direction, face looking almost guilt-ridden.Just a few steps further, and Violet stops. "We're here." She says. "The road's that way," she gestures with her shoulder. She looks at you and Louis, "anything you wanna say before we go?"
Clem and AJ stare at you both intently. Louis shrugs his shoulders, "I've said plenty."
You stutter faintly, "I- um, here," you hand Clementine your silver dollar, "I've had this on me for a long time. I used to think it was lucky, but, uh, maybe you'll have more luck with it."
She shoved the coin into her pocket and gives a grateful look, "thank you."
You nod at her, then look at AJ.
"Thanks for trying to keep us." He looks up at you with big, puppy-like eyes.
"Of course. We wish you could stay." You felt like a monster, kicking out a little boy. Him and Clementine both have had it rough being on the outside for this long.
"We didn't want this." Violet butted in.
Louis started to get impatient, "come on let's just go."
"Give us a minute!" She hissed.
"If you really feel this way," Clementine says to you and Violet, "then take us back. Don't let them kick us out!" Her amber eyes gleam with hope.
"We can't, Clem. Half of them are convinced that you're just as bad as Marlon. Or worse." Violet told her.
"If you came back, someone else might get hurt." You guiltily mention. "We can't risk it. I'm so sorry." Then you shamefully began walking back to the school. Violet and Louis follow behind, eventually catching up.
You stare at your feet as you walk. Watching the ground around you. Your brows furrow as your hand clutches your stomach.
"Ow, what the fuck." You sucked air through your teeth, powering through the discomfort.
