We reached the conservatory as she finished talking. I'm in awe. She's wise. I'm starting to think she's older than she looks. I've never met a girl like she is. Is it the culture difference? Am I having a cultural sock right now? No, I don't think it's it either.
We go to the ticket office and she starts a conversation with one of the vendors. It's the first time I hear her speaking her language. Her English is very good, better than mine, but her flow in Portuguese is so beautiful. She sounds happier in her mother tongue.
She tells me there's a Choro demonstration at 5 in the afternoon. I tell her that I don't know this genre and she shrugs because she's not able to explain to me what it is. I tell her that I think that 7 hours from now is too much for us to stay at the park, she agrees and we walk away from the conservatory.
This building is some kind of mid XX century modernism, the kind that made Brazil famous for. As we walk in the direction where the museum is located I notice that most of the buildings on the park have this aesthetic. It's beautiful. As I appreciate the views I think about this mysterious genre of music, Choro.
— Catarina, could you play me some Choro?
— Do you mean on my phone?
— Yes.
— Wait a minute... lemme find a playlist on my music app.
— Sure.
She picks her phone from her back pocket and readily opens the app. I take a quick look at the homepage before she searches for the playlist. Now I'm more curious about what she listens to so I ask her if I could see it. She hesitates for a few seconds before giving me her phone. I have no idea of what I might find, perhaps I'm curious about other K-pop groups she listens to? Or maybe I want to know if she listens to hip hop? She has this low-key and chill street style, do we like the same music? As soon as I have my hands on it I go to her library and tap the artists tab. Ok, wow. I see she has Agust D and BTS saved there. But most of the other artists are bands I've never listened to or heard of. The ones I recognize are punk bands and rock or electro bands. I see she has some old school hip hop saved and that's it. I take it in and hand her phone back. She looks at me like I am some kind of authority judging her.
— So... you don't listen to K-pop?
— Oh. Yes... no.
— But you were an Army?
— Yes. I listen to BTS.
— I saw you have my solo work saved in there as well.
— Well, you were my bias. And your solo work is very good.
— Thank you. I don't know at least half of the bands you listen to.
— Is that it? Well, I think we have very little similar taste in music...
— Indeed...
— Is that a problem for you?
— No, not really.
— Oh, good.
— Could you play me some of your favorite songs?
Catarina
We sit in the grass near the Museum of Modern Art, he sits by my side so we can share my earphones. He opens his bag as I put on my favourite playlist with my favourite songs. The same I listened to earlier this morning. This playlist is something I've been working on for years. It has the most precious tracks to my heart. Is it a mess? Yes. But my jams are part of myself. If you listen to it, you should be able to make out my character.
