PRESENT TIME

"That was a commendable presentation, Mr. Devilla, yet I find myself quite averse to your proposals for this island," Mr. Haido remarked, his tone laced with a sharp, calculated sarcasm. As the Chief Operations Officer, he was known for being blunt and frequently opposing innovative ideas. "We are a premier resort establishment, not a charitable medical institution. This company's funds are not sufficient for that kind of luxury," he added, dismissively shaking his head.

I observed Liam standing before the board, looking remarkably displaced and hesitant. I could see his hands trembling as he struggled to find the right words. He had been subjected to this man's relentless scrutiny for far too long. I could no longer remain silent because I had also studied this project extensively.

"Good afternoon, everyone. I am Miguel Thompson, secretary to Sir Liam," I began, offering a brief nod to the CEO before shifting my focus to the COO. "The company holds a significant budget intended for visionary expansions. I believe that building a hospital and a large convenience store is the smartest move we can make in this area. Given the financial complexities we've encountered recently, Sir Liam's suggestion is both pragmatic and restorative. Beyond the pursuit of profit, our objective is to become a pillar of support for this entire community. It's also essential for a large company to have another source of income, especially since this business only generates revenue during holidays. Mr. Haido and everyone else, I hope you understand the CEO's proposal. The safety of the people also depends on this, as they currently have to cross the sea just to see a doctor."

The boardroom fell into a heavy silence. When I looked up, everyone was still staring at me in wonder.

"And you think we're going to listen to you here?" Mr. Haido asked, his voice cold.

Do you really want me to answer that? I thought to myself.

"Yes, because, as far as I know, this company values unity among its workers. I studied Sir Liam's proposal, and it's clear that he wants to perform well as a model leader for this company."

Mr. Haido closed his eyes, exhaling a sharp, frustrated breath. Liam gently took hold of my arm and gave it a slight squeeze, signaling me to stop. "Enough. It's not a big deal," he whispered.

"But Sir..." I started to protest, but I was interrupted by the Chief Financial Officer.

"Mr. Thompson? Are you holding onto your father's position in this company?" Mr. Lee asked seriously.
I looked down and let out a deep sigh. "No, sir... I'm sorry if you thought that. I'm just doing my job for the CEO."

"Good... Anyway, the budget isn't that great, but we can manage with the help of the company's stockholders."

"Are you agreeing with the CEO?" the Chairman suddenly asked, drawing the room's attention. "If your answer is no, then we'll discuss it legally."

"This meeting is for open suggestions... Why are you saying such things, Mr. Chairman?" the COO replied.

"I didn't mean to block your suggestions, Mr. Haido. Thank you for your insistence, but Liam's proposal is quite good, and not just because he's my son... Mr. Lee has already said that the financial issue can be solved with the help of the stockholders." The Chairman turned his gaze to Mr. Haido. "Liam's suggestion can truly help the company recover from its current state, Mr. Haido. Can we hear your detailed reasons for opposing it?"
