There is definitely something off about Becky, Seth thinks as he sits alone by the table. He watches Charlotte and Kevin wave off the leaving guests and thank them for coming to Madison's birthday party.

He sips the juice drink in his glittery paper cup. Becky didn't engage in much conversation with anyone during the entire party — including Seth. He really did try talking to her, emphasis on "tried". Becky simply kept brushing it off, and it even slightly felt like she was shooting down any sort of exchange. At one point, Seth asked if it was Becky's exam result that was bothering her, to which Becky strongly disagreed. She scoffed and said "It's nothing!" she then walked off again.

It's clearly not nothing, Seth argues in his head. Every aspect about Becky's behaviour says otherwise! So now, at the end of the party, Becky is nowhere to be seen and Seth is finishing his fourth consecutive glass, in his quiet retrospection about today. Then from the corner of his eye, he sees Madison crouching and giggling behind a tree near him. She notices him and goes behind his chair, shushing him.

"What's going on?" Seth chuckles, "Hiding from Mommy?" He discreetly glances behind him.

She whispers something back but the softness of her voice wasn't enough in the open space filled with various background noise, so he asks again. Instead of a response though, Madison suddenly pulls his hand, causing him to stand up. Then still hiding behind him, she pushes Seth forward into the house. Madison's laughter was highly contagious so despite being incredibly confused, Seth played along and allowed himself to get pushed by the small lady by the hip. He eventually arrives at the kitchen and spots Becky facing the wall with one hand leaning on the counter, facing away from the door they had just entered. He feels himself getting pushed closer to Becky and then briefly stops, currently standing right across from her. Madison jumps out and startles Becky, appearing into her view. They both laugh for a while until Becky sees Seth, her laugh then dissipates into a small smile.

There was a slight twinge in Seth's chest, noticing this.

"I hid behind uncle Seth so there was really no chance you could spot me!" Madison says proudly, interrupting the awkward tension rising between them.

"You really got me there, young miss." Becky says even though she sensed their entrance earlier.

Madison glances at Seth, "Actually I brought uncle Seth so you won't be so sad anymore."

Still keeping her smile, Becky shifts her eyes in thought. "But I never said I was sad." said Becky, crouching to level with Madison's height.

"Aren't you sad without uncle Seth?" Madison tilts her head.

There was a small flutter in Seth's chest, noticing how Becky couldn't immediately disagree. Somehow it gave him hope and it refreshed him from an entire day of looking for a possible fault he might've made that caused Becky to keep avoiding him. Perhaps there's a chance to turn things around?

Nope.

It stretched for days. As long as Seth didn't pester Becky about what was troubling her anymore, routine kept flowing like usual and everything else seemed reasonably fine with Becky so Seth decided he'd rather not bring it up.

"There's no point in hiding it. Just tell me what's wrong." Charlotte sternly says to Becky who was spacing out in front of a calendar.

"What?" Becky asks blankly.

"You heard me." She gives her the mum-look, "You visit here on a weekend, which implies wanting a chat, yet you've been extremely quiet. You keep staring at nothing and could barely hold a conversation with anyone, including me! And, you're not wearing your earring. Clearly, there's an explanation for these oddities with you." She leans her back on the wall beside her.
