"I could've told you, you're right," Connor said as they walked towards the railings, "but it would've been different. Jamie didn't deserve to die then."
"So why now?" Fred pressured, raising an eyebrow as they finally reached the railing to the river. "Why did he deserve to die now?"
"Because, he became too problematic—"
"Admit it already..." he whispered before finally throwing the body over. When it plopped into the water and began sinking, that was when Connor faced Fred as they walked towards the cars.
"Admit what?"
"You killed him now because now you have him." When Fred pointed to the car, Connor turned and met the bright green irises of Joe, who had finally woken up from his fainting episode.
Instantly, a smile plastered on his face as he was quickened his pace, heading towards the vehicle and opening the door wider than needed. Joe's gaze was blank, not a single trace of hatred, nor strength left in his body. All he did was stare, unable to process which emotions he was supposed to feel.
Connor laughed. "Finally up, princess." He reached for Joe's cheek, softly brushing his thumb across his skin before a smirk pulled his lips. "Want to help me throw your grandmother's body in the river?"
Joe was numb, his soul barely there, and what Connor said had entered one ear, completely avoided his brain and left the other. It was as if his brain had too much destructive information to process that it had completely shut down. Hence why, Joe simply stared at the bright delirious smile on Connor's face.
"Hurry up dude," Fred called, opening the trunk to his car. "The wife started calling, I gotta go."
"Be right back." Connor blew a kiss before heading towards Fred, helping pick up the soulless body of Joe's grandmother.
As they walked towards the edge, Connor snorted when a thought crossed his mind. "Do you think Chris bought that story we made up?"
"He definitely did." Fred laughed as well, rolling his eyes at the thought of the worried Chris who appeared helpless during their meeting. "He thought he messed up."
"Right," Connor snickered, an image of Chris' worried gaze as his eyes continuously diverted between Fred an Connor when he shared their lie. "He looked as if he was about to cry when I left."
"He clearly cares about you."
"Does that make you jealous?" Connor asked Fred, seeing the way his face contorted as he glanced elsewhere.
"Of course not."
That made Connor chuckle, letting the silence consume them for a second. He thought about Chris, how he always did whatever he asked without question, the only person who was blindly loyal to him ever since he had been hired. "He's lucky he never found out the truth."
"Or else what?" Fred lifting his chin. "You wouldn't have been able to kill him."
"I know I wouldn't, but you would."
Oddly enough, that comment made Fred's heart start stinging, but he diverted his focus to the body they were carrying without giving a response.
When they threw it over the railings, Fred began jogging towards his car. "I have someone taking care of the cleanup in Jamie's appartement, so we should be good."
"Nobody's going to look for the grandmother either right?"
"Right," Fred shouted from afar. "They would all be old anyways!"
Soon enough, Fred jumped inside his car and drifted off, avoiding even glancing towards Joe, who barely had colour in his eyes.
When Connor entered the vehicle, he lit his next cigarette and turned on the radio, raising the volume and hearing the jazzy tunes that always made him feel at peace. Beside him sat a listless Joe, his emotions completely shut down and his eyes locked with the river as they began driving away.
"Don't worry Joe," Connor spoke with such glee in his tone. "This is a new beginning for us! We can start fresh, as if we never got divorced! What do you say?"
When Joe failed to respond, Connor waved his hand dismissively. "You don't have to respond, I know you want to. It's fine, when the Willa's died, it was a new beginning too. So, I'm willing to pull this one last time."
He leaned towards Joe and placed a peck on his cold cheek.
"And I know you are too."
