Anna Lipćvitz woke in the darkness.
She remembered the accident which made her parents go to heaven. They were going to the beach for Anna's birthday when suddenly, a drunk swerved right into their car and all went black. The sweat started beading down like raindrops over her face as in her mind, she relieved every single detail in her mind of the accident.
"Sis?" whispered her sister, Daphne. Daphne was 9 years old, 7 years younger than Anna, who was 16. Daphne had leukaemia for a year already and Anna had to look after her on her own.
"Sis, can you get me a glass of water, my throat hurts," Daphne again whispered.
"Sure," Anna replied. She got up, realising that it was 3 am in the morning. Daphne couldn't sleep a lot of the time due to sweat and bone aches. Anna got her a glass of water and went back to sleep.
Anna punched the alarm clock in the face as she realised that it was a Monday and it was time for school. Anna hated school, she was always bullied there because she was a "scrawny, Polish, little git." Both the boys and the girls would gang up on her, beating her up until her face was blue all over. During the day before she went to school, Anna would wheel Daphne to the hospital for her nurse to look after her.
With a sigh, Anna got up, dressed, cooked some omelettes for herself and her sister and wheeled her to the hospital then she went to school.
"Oh look, it's the Polish scrub again," Bella Seymour, the snobby pretty girl of the school rudely pointed out. "Leo, give her some shit."
Leo, her boyfriend, went over to Anna and kicked her at the back of the leg. Anna fell down, started crying and got up again to run with remarks of "Awwww, she's crying again, what a loser."
Anna got through her day with great difficulty like with the other days. Her only comfort was with her sister. Anna would spend the evening playing board games with her in their lonely apartment in Illinois.
But one day, that day would turn things around for not just Anna, but her whole life and her reputation.
It was 4pm when her last semester was over with and she could get back home. Anna huddled into the bus station to the hospital as it was a cold, pouring rain with thunder every 5 minutes. Anna screamed silently every time the lighting and the thunder stroke near her. Eventually, her bus arrived and she could get on. Trying not to look conspicuous, Anna hopped on and waited.
Anna got off the bus walking fast as it was a walk from the bus to the hospital. She walked faster and faster until she began running as the thunder crashed over her head. She never made it.
