To cover up his floundering by the honest praise coming from the shorter, cute boy, he blurts out, "I'll buy you two kind of ice cream. Soda ice and pear flavor!" Caught of guard by the sudden change of topic, I tilt my head a little.
"O-Oh, you don't have to do that, it was just a compliment." He huffs, puffing his cheeks out a bit while doing so and plants his hands on his hips.
"I'm gonna buy you ice cream, if you want it or not." His expression is full of determination and serious even though the conversation doesn't warrant so. Although.... It's kinda cute. I hide my smile behind my hand and nod.
"I guess it's alright then, if I can buy you something in return." It only takes Nishinoya a second to think it over before he throws me a thumbs up and yelling a loud 'hell yeah!'.Third p.o.v
"So Ace-wannabe. What's your specialty?" Asks Nishinoya out of nowhere after a few minutes, his mind still stuck with the white-haired boy. Hinata looks at him like a deer in headlights.
"Huh?"
"You're a lousy receiver, but there must be something you're good at." Nishinoya throws him a look as if Hinata is acting like an idiot. A guilty feeling wells up inside the latter. He's just a simple decoy, nothing worthwhile.
"Well, um..." He hesitates and then decides to get it over with, "Decoy..."
"Huh? De-What?" Nishinoya bends forward, his ears having not picked up the last bit and asks Hinata to repeat what he just said. Hinata looks down, avoidingNishinoya's pointed eyes.
"Decoy."
"Why do you say it with such a lack of confidence?" He asks, planting his hands on his hips and has a bit of a deadpanned expression. He mutters, "Because it doesn't sound flashy like Ace or Guardian Deity." His own words make Hinata falter, the slight confidence from Sugawara and Sawamura already crumbling away interrupts his self-loathing.
"Who cares how it sounds?"
"But-" Nishinoya interrupts him. "If a spiker is able to score it's because of you, the decoy," he bumps his fist against Hinata's chest, "then your position is just as important."
Kageyama is nodding behind Hinata as the latter mumbles a quiet 'yes'.
"Karasuno has the most formidable decoy now." In the background is Sugawara throwing volleyballs at Sawamura-senpai, who catches them with relatively ease to lay them in the basket.
"Thanks to Hinata and Kageyama, spikes that have never worked are possible." Sugawara comments, glancing at the orange-head and the blueberry boy.
"Yeah."
"I feel we're definitely about to change, because of the synergy Takeda-sensei was talking about."
"I hope we change for the better."
"Don't be so doubtful." Sugawara states confidently.Somewhere else
"I know I'm being stubborn, but I'm begging you. I'm inexperienced and pathetically inadequate." Explains Takeda, holding an unwavering face while the other he's talking to taps the ash of his sigaret into the ashtray. "But those boys have wonderful potential. Please be their coach," the smoke of the sigaret leaves through the man's nose.
"Ukai-kun."
"You sure are persistent, sensei." Retorts Ukai, a hint of annoyance slips through his voice, indicating this isn't the first time Takeda talked to him. Takeda almost holds a look of helplessness. "That's the only thing I'm good at."
"Being tenacious won't get me to coach them. My granddad was a coach, but I'm not cut out for it." With a thud he closes his book and turns away from Takeda, "Sensei, I know you want a technical instructor," without interrupting his sentence he lays the book away and turns back to face Takeda again, "but what you're really after is the illustrious name of 'Ukai.'" He blows out some smoke.
The other looks a bit guilty and ashamed as he admits, "Frankly, there's that, too. Ever since Coach Ukai retired, our school gradually fell behind other schools. This year I was hired to fill the hole he had left, but I can't even get other schools to agree to a practice matches."
Ukai lifts his chin into the air, his eyes closed. "You think my illustrious name would turn things around?" Takeda bows, sounding close to being desperate. He probably is. "I implore you, Ukai-kun."
"I refuse." The refusal is curt, short. Takeda opens his eyes as he listens to Ukai's voice. "I acknowledge your commitment, but I don't want to babysit a bunch of pesky high schoolers." He grumbles, not noticing Takeda's face he's making.
"I'll be back." Ukai grits teeth and almost bites the sigaret in two while doing so and almost snaps, "What part of, 'I refuse,' don't you understand?" The other halts just before the exit. "I'm sorry for being so persistent, but," he only turns his head to meet Ukai's eyes halfway, "you'll understand if you see those boys play."
He gives the guy a short bow before grasping the handle to the door and opens it while Ukai watches him that can be described as astonishment and only snaps out of it at the sound of the rattling door. "I don't care how many times you ask. I'm not doing it!" He exclaims and let's out a huff in annoyance as Takeda ignores him and leaves.
"Dammit!" He starts press the sigaret harshly into the ashtray, intending to put it out only to yelp in pain as it burns his fingers. "Ouch!"At School
Zayd p.o.v
During lunch, I'm eating with Yumi, who's on the girl's volleyball team, while chatting with each other about various people we have. Right now I'm telling her about meeting Nishinoya, the Libero, or also known as the Guardian Deity, and an unknown Ace, named Asahi, but after looking him up I remembered him and watched immediately a few matches of Karasuno. The only thing I just couldn't get information off of, was why he suddenly stopped with volleyball.
"I just don't know why." I'm definitely not whining. Her eyebrows scrunch up and she pauses with chewing.
"I believe the girl's team has mentioned Asahi a few times, but I didn't know he was the Ace." Just as I'm about to ask her if she can ask the girls for more information regarding Asahi, an orange-haired boy pops up in the front door of my class.
"Zayd-san!"
"Hinata-san?" I choke out, feeling surprised by the sudden appearance of him and stand up before making my way of to the front of the class, only to notice Kageyama-san is there also. Behind me I hear another chair scraping backwards, no doubt Yumi also wants to know why they are here.
"Oh, you're here, too, Kageyama-san?" He nods in response.
"We wanted to meet Ace! Do you want to come with us?" Hinata asks and I turn to Yumi, who grins widely.
"Did you think you are just gonna leave me out of the fun? I'm in." I nod and we both quickly get back to our seats and close our lunches before packing our bags. We both rush simultaneously to meet Hinata- and Kageyama-san outside. With the four of us, we walk to the third hall.Third p.o.v
He stops before a desk, his hands are clenched tightly and he doesn't start talking till the other guy who's desk he stopped before greets him with a sheepish smile. "Hey, Suga. It's been a while."
"Please. Come back to us, Asahi." Asahi let's out a chuckle of amusement and continues to smile. "Nishinoya's no longer suspended. He's coming back, too." He chuckles again, this time a bit louder and bows his head slightly, his eyes closed. "I see. I'm glad. It's reassuring to have Nishinoya behind you."
"And you, too." Adds Sugawara, "everyone feels better when you're there to decide the toss." Asahi already is waving his hand as Sugawara finishes with speaking. "I appreciate the sentiment, but I'd get in everyone's way again if I came back." Not even a second later Sugawara slams his hands onto his desk.
"Listen to me." He urges. "We have a friendly and smart first-year manager now, an amazing setter, and a formidable decoy." Asahi looks take aback, but listens, so Sugawara takes it as a hint to continue. "You won't have to bear the burden alone any more. If you and Nishinoya came back, Karasuno will no longer be fallen champs."
A self deprecating smile settles it's way onto Asahi's lips. "Our team is on the verge of transformation. Now more than ever we need our pillar, the ace-"
He's cut off by a classmate of Asahi's. "Azumane." They both turn simultaneously to the voice. "The guidance counselor's ready for you." He walks away, leaving a tension behind between them. Asahi stands up a with an apologetic smile and nods. "Sorry, Suga." And starts to walk away before he can even utter a word."You better go first."
"You're the one who wanted to see the ace!" Outside the classroom are Hinata and Kageyama arguing over something trivial while Zayd tries to break them up and Yumi just watches as if the whole thing is amusing to her. Meanwhile the group doesn't notice the guy called 'Ace' is walking past them.
"B-But the third-year classroom is scary." Wails Hinata, only to be snapped back to attention as Sugawara calls out, "Wait, Asahi!"
"Asahi?"
"What?" He turns his head to look over his shoulder back to Sugawara. Hinata looks close to fainting as he takes the huge guy in that is apparently Asahi and slowly starts to creep behind Kageyama and Zayd. Yumi squints her eyes, taking the tall guy in. Wait.... I have seen him before.
Finally noticing the little group standing there, Sugawara turns to them. "Huh? What are you guys doing here?" Both Kageyama and Hinata freeze up like they were caught sticking their hands in a cookie jar while Zayd and Yumi are at lost for words.
"Oh, uhm....."Faculty Room
"Thank you very much." Takeda nods, momentarily forgetting he's talking on the phone. "No, you, too. Yes. Goodbye." With a huge grin splitting his lips in two, he stands up and cheers, not noticing or ignoring the stares he's getting.
"Good, good." He holds up a paper into the air. "This is our big chance. Something...""Something is bound to change."
