Blaire

I picked anxiously at my fingernails as David parked in the parking lot.
"You know, if you are not ready all you have to do is say the word, I'll take you back home. I won't be upset." David said.
"Can.. I just sit here for a minute and..breathe?" I asked.
"Sure. Music? No music?" David asked.
"Music." I said. David turned on the radio and kept it low.
"Have you ever..seen anyone about your anxiety Blaire?" David asked.
I shook my head.
"Dad said I didn't have anxiety, I just needed to roll with the punches." I muttered.
"You clearly.. Have some form of anxiety and I don't mean to upset you by saying that."
"I know." I nodded. "I'm..starting to figure out a lot of things about myself without him around."
"Don't think you have to give me an answer right away, but I know a therapist. A good one. I've been seeing him for years."

"You have anxiety?" I asked.
"Not exactly, its just in my line of work...it does some good to have someone who I can talk to. I have occasional nightmares from some of the things I've seen and Dr. Hopper is really good at making sure I know that they're just that. Nightmares. and I think he can help you. He's very flexible when it comes to treatment plans. If you want to try medication, he can help you with that. If you don't want to go that route he can come up with coping mechanisms to help you when your anxiety..or sound sensitivity start getting out of control." David said.

I turned and looked at him.
"You..flinch when I whistle, or..when Wilby gets barking at a squirrel. I know you don't like it when the tv gets too loud, or when too many people are talking at once. You may not think I pay attention but I do..I just want you to feel comfortable at home, at school, wherever you are because you deserve a safe place to call home." David smiled.
I felt my eyes welling over and I quickly looked away wiping my tears.
"I..I'll think about the therapy. It just takes a lot for me to talk to someone.." I said.
"Trust me, I understand." David said. "Now.. as I said earlier, if you want to go home say the word."
I shook my head.
"I promised someone I'd be here today. I..want to keep that promise."
David nodded.
"Okay, well if you need a break, or if anything happens and you need me to come get you, call me. Or find Mary-Margaret and she can call me. I know some of those teachers don't like seeing students on their phones."
"I will." I said and unbuckled and got out of the car. I turned around.
"Uncle David.." I said.
"Yes?" He asked.
"Thank you.. For you know..everything." I shrugged.
"Anytime kiddo." David smiled.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first half of the day wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. I kept getting strange looks from mostly students, and occasionally teachers too. I could hear them whispering as they walked past me in the hallway so after the first class, I ended up putting my headphones on when walking the halls.

The cafeteria was absolute Chaos, so Will and I took our lunch outside.
"Hows it been today?" Will asked.
"Not..entirely terrible." I sighed. "I Just wish people would stop looking at me like I'm broken." I mumbled and angrily stabbed at the burrito on my tray.
"Don't pay attention to them Blaire. They thrive on other peoples misery."
"How nice of them." I said.
"Most of the bad that happens in this town is covered up and tucked away to keep the image of the most perfect place to live. Yours just happened to be broadcast for the world to see and these people have no idea how to handle it properly. Its all fun games and gossip to them because they're not bloody living the nightmare you're living day to day." Will said. "Don't let them get to ya too much." He added and nudged my shoulder.
