At this point Toyota had a really popular truck that almost everyone wanted so they "redesigned". This redesign added a few new features and options. The first feature was a complete redesign of the front and rear of the truck. They added square headlights and the front wasn't as flat as the previous years but still flat. First year it was considered a midsize pickup. They also added a few more engine options including the first V6 option for the truck. This was also the first year of the 4Runner (Global) and Hilux Surf (Japan). Both those SUV's were built off of the Hilux.

As you can see Toyota updated the truck with a lot of options which pushed it to the top of the midsize truck segment.
