"You'll love them, you'll see..."

"Thank you for introducing me to your friends, Savannah, the truth is that I hardly know anyone in this city..." I whisper shyly while we get out of the taxi in the Garment District, the fashion centre of New York where some of the most famous designers of the entire world have their headquarters.

"It doesn't surprise me, you've been living here for two months but your boss is an exploiter. How much overtime are you working this week? It's insane..."

"He's the owner of one of the most important publishing companies of the country..."

"I don't care, he's a jerk who needs three assistants to solve his problems and treats you all like you're his slaves... I guess it's even worse for you since you were the last one to arrive, I bet you're in charge of all the tasks your workmates don't want to do..." Savannah looks at me sadly for a second before smiling and taking my arm, dragging me down the street. "You're going to have the time of your life tonight, I promise... I still don't know what the girls' plans for tonight are but we'll grab a bite somewhere, probably, and later we'll go to a club to drink and dance..."

The pretty girl with dark caramel skin and curly black hair keeps talking while tugging at my arm and ignores the admiring glances from men who step back to clear the sidewalk for her. Savannah walks with confidence, as if she owns the street, her high heels hit the pavement firmly stating clearly that, if one of those guys who look entranced at her toned legs under her miniskirt goes too far, she'll stab them in the neck with the very same high heel. My new friend seemed like a sweet girl to me the first time we met in the elevator, she works for a cultural foundation with offices on the floor below my asshole boss' publishing company, and we ran into each other in the coffee shop across the street, the building lobby and the bus stop a few times. I guess she noticed that I was a new girl lost in the big city and took pity on me. She was really kind...

After a lot of cups of coffee I found out that Savannah is a real character, funny and outgoing but also strong and confident, and she's the one running the foundation office very efficiently while her wealthy boss goes from one party to another rubbing shoulders with the city cultural elite. My friend swears that everything would be a hell of a mess without her and I believe it, her boss believes it too apparently, and that's why she leaves her free to do whatever she wants. Her boss only cares about posing for paparazzi wearing the best designer dresses... Savannah is a lucky girl: she earns a good salary and can afford living in Manhattan, her boss gives her fancy dresses she doesn't want to wear again and no one puts pressure on her to work an insane amount of hours. I'm not that lucky.

"... and maybe we'll go to a friend's club later and will have breakfast before going back home while the sun rises... We've booked a table in the most popular restaurant next week..."

I can't help but do the math in my head thinking about how much would that cost while we walk and Savannah keeps talking about her plans. I haven't told her that I won't be able to go with her next weekend yet, or the next one... My boss is an asshole who buries me in work but, to be honest, I can't afford turning it down, I really need the money for those extra hours. New York is an expensive city and also very big and, when I got this job in the publishing company, I had to make an important decision: living on the outskirts and spending a huge amount of money on public transport, and in addition to that I should get up very early and I'd arrive late at home in the evenings, or renting something small near my office and sleeping one more hour every morning. I chose the second option and, even if my apartment is the size of a matchbox, the truth is that it's very expensive , and combined with the food and other expenses, I can only save a few dollars of my salary every month.
