"I still don't understand it," I shake my head while Angelie pours a glass of wine for me and Savannah takes my almost full plate back to the kitchen. "I'm sorry, the chicken was delicious but I'm not hungry, to be honest."
"I think it's pretty obvious what happened: your druid took control when you realized Ruby was in danger," Jaru answers and my sisters nod. Louisa gets up rocking the baby and winks at me before leaving the room to go upstairs and put Diana to bed.
"Yes, I understand that..." I admit wearily. "But I don't know how... I don't remember what I said, what kind of spell that was, I don't remember my grandmother teaching me high level magic... I wouldn't be able to repeat it deliberately even if I wanted..."
"Well, your druid knows how to do it, that's for sure, so you only need to go with the flow next time..." My beautiful witch smiles sitting next to me, taking my hand and rubbing my fingers with her thumb. "I'm very proud of you."
"And all your sisters are grateful," Elvira smiles kindly in front of me and Lester nods next to her. "You know what Mahsati said yesterday, your ancestors are happy for you..." To be honest, all these praises are making me feel awkward because I don't think that I should take credit for what happened, only a side of me was responsible for it and I'm worried in case I can't control the druid next time. I trust her but I'd rather be aware of my actions when magic is involved... Well, the fact that my ancestors are watching me and they contact the necromancer to gossip about my progress is disturbing too and now I feel the pressure to study harder. At least, the hunter has understood finally that my druid is an ally and not an enemy and remains calmed inside my mind, watching us without intervening.
"I should go upstairs and pack my stuff," Jaru sighs but doesn't move at all and looks tired. The Council did a great job yesterday helping us to clean the hostel, erasing the memories of the hunters and taking them on their cars to other nearby cities but most members aren't young anymore and they wasted too much energy casting protective spells around the building. Azara has left this morning and Jaru will get on a plane in a few hours.
"You know you can stay as long as you want," Angelie smiles and the Australian healer nods gratefully.
"I know, my friend, but it's time to go back home. And you too, I think."
"Yes, you're right," Ruby nods and keeps rubbing my hand with her thumb absentmindedly. "I don't think our enemy is still in this city and we must go back to work. I can't keep my studio closed forever, Savannah's boss needs her, Ivy has to go back to her flower shop too... Life goes on and I won't let that bitch disturb our peace. Besides, I believe she's in New York and is waiting for us there somehow, she's lurking in the shadows, stalking us..."
"So, do you think she is one of those witches from NY that stayed at the hostel?" Thyra asks looking at my girl pensively. "She could be from California too."
"Yes, it's true, but I remember the way she chased Iselen across Broadway... I think she knows the city well."
"Ruby! Ruby Rose!" Mahsati comes into the room very anxious followed by Baguette that barks nonstop, her wheelchair hits a side table and the scarf on her head is tilted to one side, her mascara runs down her cheeks due to her tears. My girl gets up abruptly, scared, while the necromancer curses and moves her chair closer nimbly. "She needs help... your sister needs your help..."
"My sister..." Ruby asks confused.
"I've just talked to a Wicca witch from Canada..."
"Oh, you mean one of those sisters... Do you know a witch from Canada?"
"Her niece is in danger, her aunt is sure she's going to kill her and want you to save her..." Mahsati cuts her off and we all stare at her confused.
