I unlock my apartment door, drained from a day of working at the local coffee shop below me. A little corgi and her little kitten sister run up to me a second after I've opened the door fully.

I close the door and sit down on the couch that i got at a second hand shop, opening my computer to work on my other job, writing. My publisher is pretty nice. She lets me work at my own pace, and create the covers for each novel.

As i write, my mind starts drifting back to when i didn't have this freedom. The endless days of torture and pain, the whips and the food that i never touched because of the fear it might be poisoned.

In years, I'm centuries old, but i look like I'm 18, no older. Over the years, my hair has grown past my waist, I've gotten a few real tattoos as opposed to the tattoo of my horns and tail and was able to live a pretty nice life here in the big city. For the longest time i have suspected someone followed me here that day i escaped, but i have decided that if there was anyone, they would have found me by now.

As if knowing that i was remembering a painful past, Cass and Honey both curl up next to me. I pet the fur behind Cass's golden brown ears. Unlike other animals, they both are very fond of me, as if sensing a kindred spirit. I rescued Cass from an abusive home about a year after i came to earth and Honey came into my life when i saw her and her mom curled up in an alleyway, the mom already dead and Honey stumbling cause she's blind.

I sensed that they were different than others, mostly cause they didn't back away in terror when i approached. And even though nobody wanted them, i reached out cause i knew how that felt. I close my computer and lay down on the couch, slow dozing off to sleep.
