I wake up with a start, my alarm screaming at me. I turn it off and get up off of the couch and walk to my bedroom. I get dressed in my uniform, brush my hair and teeth, eat breakfast, grab my purse, and walk out the door.
I go down the creaky metal stairs to the shop and unlock the doors.
A couple hours later, i have most of my regular patrons already seated at their favorite tables, a few new ones, and a teenage couple in a corner booth.
My friend, Hannah, comes in and goes into the back to get ready. when she is done, she comes back up front to the counter and turns on the other computer.
"Hi Anise. How has your day been?" She says, turning toward me.
"I want to go back to bed. But other than that I'm fine." I say, fumbling with the cuffs of my sleeves, which cover the scars from the burning shackles of my little cell.
"Go take your break. You deserve it." She says, pushing me toward the back. I laugh and let her push me all the way to the break room.
She leaves and I look around at the small room. The 6 by 10 room has brown walls, with a print of coffee beans. A small wooden table sits to the side of the room and there are some chairs and a fridge on the other side. Then a cabinet with a sink sit next to the fridge.
I go to the cabinet and get my paints out from the secret nook i made in it. I go over to the table and start painting it, mixing to make different shades. I pull out a paintbrush and start painting the table with the cover of my new book.
A while later, I hear the door open and i turn toward the door.
I take a step back when i see a boy with brown hair and eyes like the ocean come in.
