The girl looks up from the small table with the paints on it, her hands splattered with paint. Her hair pulled into a ponytail, a few strands falling in front of her face, obscuring her ice blue eyes.
"Anise. You have some explaining to do." the lady next to me says to the girl, "You never said you had a boyfriend!"
I realize at this point that my lie to get back here will come unraveled when the blonde heard it. I give her a look that i hope will send the message of "just work with it please."
The girl does see it and she glances in between the two of it, seemingly planning something.
"OH! Babe. I told you not to visit me during work, didn't i?" she says, blushing to a color that is close to a cherry's color.
"Sorry, cherry. I just couldn't wait any longer to see you again." I respond, walking over to her and planting a small kiss on her forehead.
"Okay I'll leave you two alone to talk." The lady who walked me in says, whisking out of the room, her long blue dreadlocks being the last thing of hers to leave.
When the door closes, Anise backs away from me, giving me a dirty look.
"Seriously? Did you have to kiss my forehead? I don't even know you." She says, crossing her arms.
"I'm sorry. My name's Stephan. And yours?" I say, saying the lines i rehearsed the night before.
"Anise Demone."
"Demone? As in demon? That's a little odd for a last name."
"Yes. It is. But i don't mind it. Whats your last name?"
"Anglen. My name is Stephan Anglen." I say. She takes a step back, backing against the wall, her eyes looking into mine, with a tinge of fear and disbelief.
"Your....Stephan? Is that really you?" She says, her eyes changing to look like she's in disbelief and having been wanting to see me for a long while.
"What do you mean?" I say. Damn. She's better at this than i thought...
"Don't you remember me? It's me, little Ann." Anise says, tucking a stray hair behind her ear. "Your best friend from 5th grade?"
Really good at this. "I cant remember 5th grade really. But i have one more question. When did you move here. And where were you born?" I say, grabbing one of her wrists.
"I moved here 5 years ago. My hometown is LA." She says, trying to yank her hand out of my grip.
"Really?" I pull back her sleeve and I see a fancy cuff tattoo on it. I back up, letting go in surprise. Did i just harass a girl that is actually a human? Oh no. This is bad. Real bad.
"Now. Can you kindly please get out of my cafe before I call the police to escort you?" She says, half threatening and half asking.
"Look. I'm real sorry for this. I've been searching for someone for years and she looks a lot like you. She was even named Anise. So when you served me yesterday, I thought you were her... I"m really sorry." I say, stepping a good distance away from her. "Maybe I can make it up to you? Maybe grab a coffee or something?"
She looks at me with confusion and it seems she's trying to figure out if it was okay to trust me.
"I'll think about it. When you come back here though, if I'm up with it, I'll take you up on that offer mister." Anise says, crossing her arms over her chest. "But for now. I need to get back to working my cafe."
She grabs my wrist and leads me back into the lobby. I follow her, saying goodbye and leaving afterwards.
