"Jess, for the nth time, I'm telling you, you don't have to come with. What's the point anyway? I'm just revisiting the city my aunt lives in" the woman says, rather matter-of-factly.
Dawn hears her best friend sigh from the other line and she chuckles, because she swears she can visualise her rolling her eyes already.
"I don't know, I just have a bad feeling about this particular trip. I really don't know why though" Jess admits. Truth be told, she really doesn't know why she's worrying in the first place.
It's not that she's this overprotective. Call it her gut feeling, or best friend senses. She really has no idea.
"Well. I'm hanging up now, since I'm in the airport. I'll call you later for updates to calm you down, okay? Geez mom stop worrying" she says, trying to lighten up her friend's mood by joking around, obviously failing.
It's a good thing that Jess is her best friend who knows when she's attempting (rather, failing) to make a joke.
The call ends, and Dawn finds her worry slowly building up. Jess isn't a fortune teller or anything, but more often than few does her so called gut feeling end up true.
She decides to brush it off though, unlike the worrywart she calls "best friend". It's probably nothing, she thinks.
Jess is someone whose gut feeling is scary. It could give you relief, of course, but at times her gut feeling is ignored and then everyone simply regrets their decision of not listening to her, finding it a complete waste.
After all, it is the same Jess who had a gut feeling that Dawn's feelings for Selena would be nothing but trouble.
"You like someone huh?" Dawn remembers Jess asking back then. She remembers how she simply laughs as a response. Nothing can get past Jess, just as how Dawn can barely hide anything from Maria.
Dawn doesn't hesitate to tell the other though, before her best friend starts becoming bothered about who it is. "It's Selena"
"Oh"
Neither Jess or Dawn can tell what her response meant. It could be a sarcastic oh, one that actually means she's always known and that she is not surprised at all. But it could also be one of complete shock, something she was not able to foretell.
Oddly, it is a mixture of both. She had a feeling there was something off with Dawn around Selena but she still assumed it was just of small interest. She didn't really think it'd be her that she had serious feelings for.
Dawn clicks her tongue and smirks, "Out with it Jess. What's with her?" she asks, brown eyes staring far far away. It's weird, how her eyes are looking there but it all seems like a blur as her attention stays on the woman beside her, ready to hear some opinions. Jess always had a say about Dawn's crushes. She never intervened, only when she was sure there's something wrong with Dawn's judgement. Rather, the two never failed to give their opinions about each other's crushes. After all, what else are best friends for?
"She's cool. She's nice and pretty, cute too. Certainly your type when it comes to personality, now that we know what your type is exactly thanks to your cousin"
Dawn smiles to herself. There's a catch. There always is. Life does not simply offer you good things when there's nothing in return. It's too greedy for that. "But?"
"Well, I'm kind of worried about you. Are you sure about this? Somehow my gut feeling tells me Selena is going to be different for you. To add, isn't she straight?" she asks, concern evident in her voice.
