11.
Sister Jude ordered guards to handcuff Kit's wrists to her desk. They pulled off his shirt, his back exposed to me. I looked at Sister Jude and took a step backward. My bottom lip trembled with so much fear that I literally had to bite on it until it drew blood. I couldn't do this to Kit. Why? Why did she enjoy torturing me so much like this?
"I-- I can't, Sister Jude..." I stuttered and she raised her eyebrows at me.
"What do you mean by, you can't? It's honestly not that hard," she replied, and I swallowed hard. Tears prickled at the corners of my eyes and I looked up at her with fear coursing through my veins.
"I can't do this, let alone to Kit. He's my friend."
"Hm. I knew you couldn't, weakling," Sister Jude said and called out to her guards. "You know what to do." She snatched the whip from me and handed it to one of the guards. What was she doing? "And you, take her away," she told the other.
"What?" I screeched, and the guard grabbed me by the arms, dragging me out of the room. "No! Stop! Let me go, what are you doing?!" I kicked and thrashed in his arms. My mind started to race. Kit, Kit, Kit. I let out a high-pitched and horrific scream when I heard earsplitting and piercing shouts and screams coming from her office. Kit.
I continued to struggle against his grip, screaming out Kit's name as the guard pulled me down the dark corridors. And the further I was dragged away from him, the louder his screams got.
\\
There it was. A scream that belonged to my mother. Then another scream. Lana. Then a third. Grace. and one final one, the loudest one yet. Kit. I covered my ears and screamed at the top of my lungs as well. Nothing came out, except for this faint and eerie sound.
You're not strong anymore, Hope Prescott.
Get out of my head!
No!
Get out!
I said get out!
No!!
I was falling, falling into insanity more after every second.
Falling.
"Hope! Hope!" I was awoken from my horrible nightmare the next morning as Lana shook my shoulders. My eyes fluttered open, and I let out a small groan.
"What... Was that really necessary?" I asked her with a groan and pulled the sheets over my body some more. Lana just gave me a light glare and pulled the sheets off of me, staring at me.
"Fine, fine. I'm up," I said with a small grunt and stretched myself out a bit with a small yawn.
"Yes, it was, Hope. There's gonna a new inmate coming here this morning." Did I just hear what I think I heard? A new inmate?
"Inmate?" My eyebrows shot upwards. "Oh, I've got to see this now. But first, let me check on Kit." I managed to pull myself out of my bed and sauntered over to Kit's cell without any guards noticing me. I knocked on his door before opening it up. Kit looked up at me and smiled.
"Oh my God, Kit. I'm so sorry." I rushed over to his side and gave him a small hug. Ge hugged me back, and winced slightly. "Ouch."
"How much did she give you?" I asked him silently and kissed his forehead.
"Forty." My eyes widened.
"What? But that's two times more than what you were supposed to receive!" I exclaimed and he shrugged.
"I had yours added onto mine, remember?" he replied and I sighed.
"Don't say anything please." He silenced me with a kiss. I kissed him back and we pulled back when none of us had any breath left in us.
"Are you feeling any better?" I asked him, taking his hand in mine.
Kit nodded. "Yeah, it still really hurts though, but I'm recovering... Sorta. I wouldn't ever let Sister Jude lay that whip on you, that's why I did it. It'd be too hard for me to let you suffer," he said. I looked down and ran my fingers over his knuckles gently.
"Hey, you wanna know something?" I asked him, changing the subject.
"What?"
"We're going to get a new inmate."
"You mean like an ally?" He wondered and I nodded.
"Possibly," I answered, and Kit nodded his head back. "Are you feeling up to meeting them?" I then asked him.
Kit shook his head and leaned it back into the pillow with a small sigh. "I just need some rest, okay? You go, but I'm staying here," he said.
"Okay, I understand. feel better soon. I will get you out of here, Kit Walker. I promise you." I kissed his cheek, and walked out of his cell, shutting the door behind me. I found Lana, and we both quickly rushed out to the front of the manor where the newbie would arrive at. I watched carefully as a police car pulled up.
Everyone gathered around the entrance to get a first look at our new criminal. Two policemen pulled a young man from the car, handcuffs bearing his hands together. He was handsome, very handsome. Even with his disheveled dark hair, clothes, and sad eyes.
"Step aside everyone and let them pass!" Sister Mary Eunice hollered, attempting to move the crowd back to clear the entrance. We watched the man being brought up the many steps into the manor, and for a split second, we made eye contact. I could almost sense some remorse and innocence in his eyes. Was he innocent like Kit?
After the guards cleaned the new patient up, they brought him into the common room. I saw him out of the corner of my eye as Lana and I played cards together. Kit still remained in his cell, sleeping or doing whatever to calm his nerves and relax. When the young man approached Lana and I shifted in my seat.
"Hi. May I join you guys?" He asked us and Lana glanced up at him.
"Oh... I'm sorry, but this is only a two-person game," Lana replied coldly. He rubbed the back of his head awkwardly and I gave her a glare.
"Don't mind her. You can sit with us," I said with a smile. He pulled up a third chair beside me. "Anyways, I'm Hope, and this is my friend, Lana Winters. What's your name?" I asked and he looked me straight in the eyes.
"James, just James."
