I once did wayyy too much research into life for Evacuees in WWII Britain because I had an obsession with it briefly *okay for quite a while*. Anyway, enjoy two of my special interests meeting.
Setting - WWII - September 1939, and Lisa, H and Faye are child evacuees from London (children sent to the countryside to live away from the fear of bombing).
Faye was lost on an unfamiliar train platform, surrounded by children she didn't know, and with everything that had already happened today she felt quite like crying. She hadn't wanted to leave her parents at the station while her and her sister had gone away for a 'holiday' on the train, but her big sister had convinced her she had to so she'd be safe. And Clare had promised their parents, and her for that matter, that she'd look after Faye until they were all back together again. And she'd already gone and lost herself somewhere on a train platform without her older sister. She'd been with her, clinging to Clare's hand like her life depended on it (and Faye honestly felt it did) and then she'd lost her grip when her coat got stuck on something and ended up carried along in a wave of other children and off the train. She clutched her teddy's arm a bit tighter, and hoped by some magic she'd find Clare. But there were so many other people, so many tall boys and older girls that she couldn't see Clare anywhere in the crowd. Another little girl, much shorter than Faye, shuffled up against her and looked up at her with wide eyes. She looked just as scared as Faye felt.
"Are you lost too?" Faye asked the girl.
She didn't say anything, but nodded a stray tear escaped her eye as she did.
Faye couldn't help but feel a connection with the little girl. If she didn't find her older sister she'd happily manage to adopt this dark haired girl as a little sister while she was here instead. It'd make a change from being the young one. "Its okay, I'll look after you."
The little girl smiled. She too was clutching a teddy (this one a worn bear instead of a dog like Faye's), but when Faye offered her a hand the little girl took it.
"Our teddies can be friends too if you want." Faye said.
The little girl smiled and nodded."Lisa! I'm sorry. I lost ya." Called a blond guy from in front of them, he'd been looking around confused before he caught sight of the girls. He ran over to them, smiling at the brunette as he did.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Is she your sister? You can take her back off me again if you want. She just looked so scared and lost, I had to check she was alright." Faye said to him.
The guy grinned at her. "Nah it's fine, she's me cousin, but we lived together practically me whole life. And I think we're all scared. Ya certainly look it."
Faye nodded. "I've lost my sister and the other girls from my school. Honestly, I'm terrified."
"We'll look after ya. I'm Ian and that's Lisa. What's ya name?"
Faye frowned and realised she never introduced herself to Lisa. "My name's Faye." She replied. "What's with her can she not talk?"
"She can, she's probably just too scared. Uhhhmmm... Not to scare ya any more Lis, but where're ya brothers?" Ian answered.
"I lost all three of 'em." She replied quietly.
"Oh dear. Ya mum won't be a happy bunny. Ya were meant to take care of them."
Faye bit her lip. "My sister's meant to be keeping an eye on me, guess she did well at that one too."
"Well hows about this, if the three of us are kept together, we'll adopt ya. Us Londoners'll have to stuck together." Ian said
Faye nodded, ignoring the boy's bad grammar. "I'd like that.""Londoners! First, it's lovely to see so many promising young faces in our village. I hope your trip won't be long, because I'm sure you'll all miss your parents, but we will try and make you feel at home here while you are. Now though, you need to follow me up to the Town Hall, and from there you will be Billeted to families for the duration of your stay." Called a woman from near the entrance to the platform.
Ian took a firm hold of Lisa's spare hand and looked at Faye. Faye smiled a bit and tightened her grip on Lisa's other hand.
"We need to stuck together!" He called over the noise of the crowd of London children.
Faye nodded. "If I see my sister I might go join her though!"
"Okay and if ya don't try ya best to stuck with Lise and I okay." He replied.
He looked at Lisa's case, which she was looking down at hopelessly, and then they both picked it up at once, both holding the handle, and they moved along with the flow of London children, some trying their best to stick together with siblings or friends, others confused, a few waiting to see if they caught glimpse of anyone familiar.
