For the sake of nostalgia, I'm back.
Soldier's jaws dropped as they gazed upon the Ice Queen's castle. Spires rose to the sky like the arms of a snowflake and the whole thing glittered like a many-facetted chandelier. The citadel was truly a fortress, turrets and ramparts adorned the walls and spikes were strategically placed along the wall where they were hardly visible but would certainly get in the way if someone were to attempt to scale the walls. The castle must have been deeply embedded in the mountaintop, balanced almost precariously atop the mountain.
The only thought to cross Percy's mind was: How impractical...
It was a long moment before anybody moved. They were all simply too entranced in the beauty of the towering structure. Finally, the young Prince Hans strode forward. In doing so, he snapped the rest of the soldiers out of their trances. The group pressed forward along the ridgetop towards where the castle stood out from the rest of the frosty surroundings.
As they rounded a bend, skirting a large stone in their way, their eyes fell upon an enormous chasm separating them from the front door. Perseus, along with several other soldiers, groaned.
"Hold on!" Prince Hans called back from a few paces ahead of the rest of the group. "There's a bridge up ahead. "
As the rest of the group pressed forward, they too came to the base of what was less a bridge and more a staircase up to the base of the castle (of course made entirely of ice). On either side of the base of the staircase was what seemed like large boulders covered in snow.
"We need a plan of attack before going up there."
"I say we climb the walls and break in through one of the windows."
"Are you kidding? You saw those spikes on the walls right? We'd impale ourselves on those ages before we find somewhere to break in."
"I shouldn't have eaten that off-smelling fish this morning."
"What? Feeling a bit out of it? We're about to go up against someone with the power of winter on their side. Feel better now?"
"No, I'm feeling okay but that snow-mound over there is getting up..."
"Minotaur dung!" Perseus, who had been rubbing his temples in exasperation until that point also took notice of the moving pile of snow.
A low rumbling and shaking quickly grabbed the attention of the rest of the squabbling soldiers who all immediately drew their swords with a nearly synchronous ring of steel on steel. The beast slowly rose to its feet and turned toward them as one soldier nervously embedded his sword in the opposite snow-pile. What could only be described as some sort of ice golem stood in front of the small battalion of soldiers. It had ice spikes protruding from all over its face, body and limbs and stood nearly four times taller than the tallest man there. Its immense figure slowly raised its right leg and slammed it back down into the ground. The force of the blow rattled the earth and the snow on the edge of the precipice crumbled away and fell into the void below.
"Disable its legs!" Prince Hans cry echoed through the ranks of Arrendelians and foreign soldiers that stood before the gargantuan monster. Perseus had to give it to the man, he kept a cool head under pressure. The soldiers voiced their battle cries and rushed forward, their voices quickly drowned out by the bellowing roar the golem offered in response. The shear force of the sound vibrated through the ground and the earth beneath a couple of soldiers' feet gave way off the edge of the ridge.
With shouts of fear, the two men scrambled along the falling slab of ice they were on even as it slid away from the safety of solid ground. In response, another soldier grabbed the silken rope from his waist and whipped one end of it after the two falling men. One grabbed the rope and the other grabbed the other man's foot. The ice fell away beneath their feet until they were dangling above empty air. Two more soldiers grabbed onto the man holding the rope and began to pull their comrades to safety.
