What if Rue Didn't Die?

Chapter 3

Katniss and I start to set up the cornucopia. We hear the leaves rustle in a bush near us. Katniss slowly creeps over to it knife in hand ready to stab someone. She throws rocks into the bush still keeping her distance when we hear an "ow". "Who's there?" Katniss yells to the bushes. Silence. "I said who's there?" She repeated once more. "Thresh." The bushes say. I run over to them and hug Thresh. "I was worried that you had died. I haven't seen the fallen tributes in the sky lately. But I kept hearing cannons and was worried that you left me." I said with tears in my eyes. Ever since Peeta had died, Katniss has had a cold hard expression on her face. I'm worried about her. We walk back to the cornucopia. "Can we keep him?" I asked Katniss. She chuckled, "yea I guess." That's the first time she smiled since Peeta died 2 days ago. It's turning night and the anthem plays. During the anthem there was an announcement made, "we are sorry for any worry caused by not putting fallen tributes in the sky. We were having technical inconveniences. They are now fixed and will go back to regularly showing in the sky. So without further ado, here they are along with the days." Then a bright "screen" showed up. District 1, marvel and glimmer, 3 days ago. District 2, clove, 3 days ago, Cato, 2 days ago. District 3 tributes, 3 days ago. District 4 tributes, 1 week ago. District 5, (Foxface) 1 day ago. District 6 tributes, 1 week ago. District 7 tributes, 5 days ago. District 8 tributes, girl 9 days ago, boy, 8 days ago. District 9 tributes, girl 1 week ago boy, 2 weeks ago. District 10 tributes, girl 2 days ago, boy, 5 days ago. District 12, Peeta Mellark, 2 days ago. The "screen" then disappeared. I still had the image of Cato and Peeta's deaths still fresh in my mind. Thresh took guard while Katniss and I slept. Before I knew it, I woke up and it was light out. I saw Thresh looking out into the distance. "What's wrong?" I asked. "I killed a man last night. In the heart. In the forest. Just to watch him die. I want you or Katniss to win rue." He replied. That must mean that the district 5 boy must have died. "Thresh, it's only us 3 left. I can't kill anyone. Last time I did, I broke down in tears. If I kill you or Katniss then I'll never live with myself." I said. "You don't have to rue, Katniss and I discussed it." And with that, he stabbed himself in the heart, and Katniss ate the nightlock. It's over. I won.
