I was wondering aimlessly along a path in the woods, thinking that this time yesterday I was packing up my house in a small village on the outskirts of Chicago. Maybe I'll make some friends here though, because no one knows me as the weird girl who doesn't talk to anyone. I like blending into the background and having people pretend that I'm not there. When it was just me and my Father I was an extrovert but then he married that she devil, things just went down from there and then he left so I was stuck with a woman I have to call my mother and her god-awful daughter Marie.

I'm  Sang Sorenson, I am 15 years old and about to go into my sophomore year at Ashley Waters. I think I am ugly. I have dirty blonde hair that goes down to my waist, green eyes, a small button nose. I am a pile of bones and 4'9". I've been exploring the woods since six o'clock this morning and I need to be back at my house by 8. Which is... now, shoot I'm late. I'm dead. As I start sprinting back in the direction of my house, I can only hope that my mother and sister have not woken up yet, I still need to make breakfast. I hate to think of what my mother would do to me if she found out I was late to make breakfast, let alone outside in the woods.

Trigger warning, the following scene contains abuse:

Once I can see my house, I notice that there is only one light on, hopefully I just forgot to turn it off when I left. But , today is not my lucky day. When I open the door I hear a yell, "Sang get in here now you whore," the unmistakable sound of my mother. I didn't want to know what she was going to do to me, not this time. I walked into the bedroom. I pushed a finger to my lip and got ready to be punished. " Where were you?" She demanded.

"In the shed," I whispered quietly, my voice was still healing from the last time she made me drink lemon and vinegar.

"Take that Finger away from your mouth and speak up," she says, getting angrier by the second.

"In the shed," I repeat louder.

"Why do you lie do me? Do you really expect me to believe you were in the shed and not playing with boys? You little filthy whore." She was now roaring, I was sure the whole street could hear. I really hoped they couldn't because the punishment would just be worse if someone came to help me. I was now shaking in fear of what she was going to do to me, she had never been this angry before. She ran into the kitchen, grabbed a knife and started slicing my clothes off. The blade was close to my skin, it was going to hit me, she was going to kill me. I braced myself, ready to feel the slice through my skin. My eyes were shut tight and prepared for the pain, but it never came. Instead, my mouth was forced open and a boiling liquid was poured down my throat. It was boiled water, scalding hot I choked and gagged, but she held my mouth open until it was gone. The bits I choked on, now on my skin, already coming up red. She flung me onto the ground and left. Everything went dark.

Trigger warning- End of abuse scene

I woke. I must have passed out. I had school tomorrow, or was it today. How long had I been passed out for? I tiptoed into the living room, my mother was asleep on the couch. It was hard to imagine she was the same person who did what she did to me. I walked into the kitchen, feeling safe now I knew that my mother wouldn't be bothering me for a while. I checked the time. Six-thirty in the morning. It was Monday.

I had no idea how I was going to get ready in half an hour, I had blood on my face from where my lips had chapped and cracked. I needed some chapstick. I brushed through my knotty hair, put on a knee length pencil skirt and a white blouse, and washed my face. It was then I realized I had to test my voice. I tried to say Hi, but it cracked on the I, just sounding like 'h' on its own. I wrote a note saying that I had a sore throat and that I lost my voice, which was partly true.
