jonah kept his hand on the steering wheel as the beach boys played in the background. every so often he looked through the rear view mirror at jack. he would catching him pulling his hair or picking at his scabs from the other night.

"don't pick that bubs." jonah said softly as jack stopped.

jonah could tell jack's anxiety was getting the best of him. he never wanted to think jack is capable of hurting himself but he the boy's behavior could ultimately lead to anything.

when jonah got to their destination he paused for moment before turning to jack.

"anything that happens moving forward i will be here. every step of the way." jonah said as jack looked back at him.

he helped jack out the car and held his hand when walking into the building.

they waited in the office as jack kicked his feet back and forth as he played with his fingers.

"jack herron," a nurse called as the father and son got up.

"hi i'm maisey and i'm just gonna check your vitals, okay?" the nurse said kindly as she checked his blood pressure, height, and weight. she documented it and left the room.

"dr. irwin will be in soon." she smiles sympathetically.

in less than five minutes dr.irwin arrived.

"hello i'm—jonah?" the doctor said surprised.

"dr.irwin, it's been years!" he said hugging the older man.

"oh come jo, on you know it's ashton. look how big you've gotten, i haven't seen you since your residency days are you still practicing? how's corbyn doing?" ashton asked.

"yeah, he's good, he at home with our other boys at the moment." jonah said.

"well this must be jack then? you two adopted?" he asked as jonah nodded.

"nice to meet you jack, i'm dr.irwin or ash for short. i used to teach your dad when he was younger." ashton explained as jack nodded.

"what seems to be the issue?" ashton asked.

"he's having recurring night terrors lately."

"did you wake him up before he typically has one?"

"yes but they happen at all hours of the night."

"what else?" ashton asked taking out his notepad.

"anxiety attacks, sleeping problems, and lack of communication skills."

"in what way?"

"he doesn't at all talk, aside from when he's asleep."

"okay. jack were gonna try something. do you like to draw?" ashton asked as jack nodded.

"okay draw me something you like." ashton said as jack begins to draw his brothers, his mom, and his daddies.

"good, what about something you don't like?"

jack picked up the crayons drawing big red and orange flames. jack dropped the crayons on the floor starring back at the paper.

"is this fire?" ashton asked as jack nodded burying himself into jonah.

"okay, okay jack. it's okay, it's all over." jonah hushed, rubbing the boy's back.

"i want him to do a study. since he's an easy person to overwhelm it'll take a week." ashton said as jonah nodded.

"also practice asl with him, it will help his communication skills." ashton instructed.
