What is the origin of love? Aristophanes told a story.
In the beginning there was three sexes: man, woman and androgynous. Each was round like sphere with a face and two arms and two legs on either side.
They would walk forward or backward, tumble and roll on the ground. These three played in the fields. Frolicking.
Somehow they challenged the power of Zeus and he punished them by splitting them in half so there was two of each, as though that wasn't enough he separated them so they could never find their other half.
What was the double man(now two men) is the origin of gay male relationships, and what was the man\woman now split into man and woman is the origin of heterosexual relationships, and what had been the double woman(now two women) is the origin of gay female relationships.
Aristophanes described the suffering of the three sexes after they were each split into half and separated  "they felt as if their soul has been torn apart" . Consequently each spent all its time searching for the other half, hoping to reunite.
Each was looking for their soulmate and until he found it he spent his days wallowing in sadness. Aristophanes said "in the pursuit of the other half of one's self is called love"
Today we each have The freedom to search for our soulmate and if fortunate we may find our "other half".
