CHAPTER EIGHT[ oo8. the runaways ]
HANNAH SPENT most of her nights too distracted and far too worried to even get more than an three hours of sleep each night that she's been here, which has been fifteen nights. She had hoped that spending more time at this ridiculous school would eventually lead her to get more sleep, but the more she spends here, the more she wants, or rather needs, to find a way out. There has to be a way out, and she was going to be the one find it.
Not much has happened during these fifteen days. Hannah and Vita have spent an awful amount of time together. When they weren't sneaking off to the garden—and getting caught each time—they were hiding off in the library or in Hannah's bedroom. They were inseparable.
"So this lord, you never seem to shut your mouth about," Vita started, Hannah's head laying on her lap. Hannah, with a book in her hands, while Vita held onto Hannah's hair as it was going to slip away from her grasp. Her hands always found themselves playing with each strand of Hannah's hair. "What's with you and him? Do you love him?"
Hannah looked up from her book. She saw a hint of jealousy on her face. She ignored it and continued reading her book.
"I wouldn't call it love. We just met." Hannah laughed, lies. Or maybe not. She had just met the boy, but there was one thing she couldn't lie about, her feelings for him. He did after all comfort her even through memories, and that's how one knows how in deep Hannah is. She wasn't going to admit it. She was too stubborn to.
"That's not what that look tells me." Vita forced her smile, her fingers continuing to brush through Hannah's hair. "He seems important to you. Why don't you finally admit it, so when you finally get out here, you can go on and find him?" Vita hoped for a reply, but Hannah didn't seem to want to respond. "I'm not blind. You can admit it here, with me. It's not like I am going to walk up to the boy and tell him."
"I am not going to admit to something that's not true." Hannah sighed, putting her book back in her face, to get from underneath Vita's stare. She always seemed to know when Hannah was lying. "Anyway, we never—"
Vita snatched the book from Hannah's grasp. "How do you manage to read such boring books? About history, aren't they?"
"Yes, but I quite like the idea of reading, even if they are such boring books." Hannah smiled, teasingly, a bit thankful Vita changed the subject. Hannah brought gaze up, they bore into Vita's eyes. There was a hint of hesitation in them—in Vita's eyes—like she wanted to do something, but there was something that was holding her back.
