CHAPTER FIFTEEN:[ o15. dance lessons. ]
"HAVE YOU EVER attended a ball?" Hannah asked William, cutting their silence in half. She wanted to rid the thoughts from her mind. She didn't want Charlotte's warnings to crowd her mind for the rest of the ride. There's no doubt that he's there, so be prepared. She knew well enough that Charlotte was right, since he was in the House of Lords now, he's sure been invited to several balls, and Enola is going, so it meant that he'd attend with her. But she'd rather not think of a problem that is not current. Right now, she worried about sitting, standing, and walking the way a real lady should.
Usually, she did not worry, or rather care about those sort of things. She had more important problems to worry about, but this time, she had no idea why she was so caught up on her posture, or how she stood and sat. Was it that she was going to be in a room filled with such judgement? No, because she could care less about being judged. She knows how harsh girls can be, especially when you spent your whole life judged by the same one. It was none of that, but she wanted it to be, she wanted to worry about the girls looking at her differently because they could tell that she was not from that social class, then she did not have to hate herself for thinking about him. She did not want to think about how she was going to look in his eyes. She wanted to look strong and independent, but how could she look strong and in no need for a man if she was going to have William walking beside her?
"A couple," William said, finally responding to her. He no longer looked out of the carriage window. He looked at her and he gave her a smile, a nervous one.
Her eyes narrowed at him. Something seemed off about him, but she didn't know what. "Are you alright?" Hannah finally asked. There was a shift in the mood. It was clear that the mood had been there since they got on the carriage, but she was just barely noticing it.
"Yes," He lied.
Hannah gave him a look. The look told him that she didn't believe him, but she wasn't going to push him to tell her. She knew her place in this situation and that was to stay out of it until William wanted to tell her about it.
"Lambton..." William began, his eyes shutting closed. He seemed like was not expecting to tell her this, but he did anyway. "He might be there. We agreed that it was best we didn't speak. The last time we spoke was when we said goodbye." He paused again. "I had hoped that we didn't have to see each other again, but here we are and he has no idea. The last thing I want is to ruin the purpose of why you're here, but I really do not what to see or speak to him."
Hannah tried reading his expression. He was telling the truth, which made her feel terrible for forcing him to come along. "You can go back home. Don't worry about me, I have it under control."
