Song: Thanks for the memories
By: Fall Out Boy
I enter Master Williams's house, a smile on my face, which was left from laughing at one of Isaiah's jokes, maybe I should give that boy a chance. As my mind was occupied by my thoughts I didn't take notice that Elijah had appeared.
"I take it, break went well, considering that smile on your face." he says and I jump caught off guard.
"Oh, you scared me! Yes it went quite well, Isaiah said a funny joke and I haven't been able to get it out of my head," I begin to laugh as I think about it.
"Glad to see you laugh again," he says and my laughing slows down as I realize he's right. Sure I smile here and there but when was the last time I laughed like that?
"I am too," I say softly and then blush as I realize what I just said out loud.
"Eloise what happened, for you-?"
"Eloise dear do you mind helping me with some knitting?" Mistress Hazel asks.
"Yes, Mistress," I answer, giving Elijah a small smile before I go and join her in the living room.
"You must be very happy to be united with Elijah again, it seems as if yesterday you two were kids, playing hide and seek by the lake," mistress Hazel says, a small soft smile taking over her pretty face.
"I am very much happy about it, although I must admit, I forgot about him for a while."
"Oh my dear child, with all that you had to go through, I don't blame you. Especially that one horrid overseer, which I'm glad we fired. I told James that he should look into their backgrounds before hiring, glad that taught him a lesson!" Mistress Hazel huffs and I slightly nod as the memories that I tried to repress come rushing back.
"I am as well, glad that you fired him Mistress," I say as I push the memories back, knowing that if I didn't I'd soon be sick.
"Oh, I already told you, call me Hazel, not that Mistress nonsense, we'd known each other for years, you're practically family," she says and I nod, a little smile taking over, I always forget to call her Hazel considering I've been addressing her as Mistress for so long.
"Yes, as you wish Mistress, I mean Hazel," I guess old habits die hard. She just giggles and shakes her head. I help her with her knitting for a couple of hours and soon it's supper time.
"Eloise dear, would you care to get dinner started while I clean this up?" She asks and I nod.
"I'm on it Mistress," I say and head to the kitchen. I begin to rummage around as I get the ingredients for biscuits, and meatloaf. I get the green beans and the corn. I go to grab one more spice but it's too high up on the shelf. I would wait for Mistress but she's barely an inch taller than me.
"Damn spice, always testing my limits," I growl as I get up on my tip toes and try to grab it, but to no avail still cant reach it. Right when I decided to go and get a stool, an arm reaches over me and gets the spice, I look up and look into a familiar pair of hazel eyes.
"T-thank you Elijah", I say softly as he gently gives it to me, our hands slightly brushing. I then set it down and get the pots and pans, and fill them with what's needed, and then put them on the stove as I turn it on. I get out the cutting board and then go to wash my hands, afterwards I grab the cutting knife, the onion, and get cutting. I begin to hum a song that I hear Mama sing, a song that she got from one of the workers who she was close to, who had a friend from the underground railroad, who helps slaves from everywhere escape.
"Who's that girl dressed in red? Wade in the water. Must be the children that Moses led." I softly sing.
"Where did you learn that?" Elijah asks me and I jump, nicking my finger. I suck in my breath and quickly put it under water.
"I forgot you were there for a second," I chuckle lightly as I get a rag and tie it around my finger and continue to cut, and I wonder what is taking Mistress Hazel so long?
"You never answered my question," he says as he begins to take piles of the onions and put them in the mixing bowl.
"I rather not talk about it," I say, trying to keep the unwanted memories at bay.
"Eloise listen I-"
"Aw look at the two of you working together, sorry Eloise dear I didn't mean to take so long," Mistress Hazel apologizes and I shake my head, after all she saved me yet again.
"No need to apologize Mistress, after all I did say I would start while you were finishing up," I explain and couldn't help but laugh a little as she wrinkles up that little nose of hers.
"Again with the Mistress," she groans and now I'm full on laughing, sometimes she can act like a complete child and I'm pretty sure that's one of the many reasons Mr. Williams married her.
"Now I'll finish up here, you and Elijah go and start on the biscuits," she orders and we do as she says.
"Hey, how about you start on the biscuits and I'll get the vegetables ready," I offer, hoping he'll accept so that I don't have to have the possibility of answering any more personal questions.
"Are you sure you want to disobey mother, remember that one time when we disobeyed her when she told us not to eat more than two apples off the apple tree?" He asks and I laugh.
"I've never got my behind smacked so hard in my life, I'm positive she left a bruise," the two of us smile as we recall the memory.
"You just had to come in holdn' your lil ol belly, your face pale and grim complaining about a belly ache, and as if that wasn't enough you had to go and throw up," I say as we start on the biscuits.
"You didn't make it any better, you threw up right after me," he laughs.
"Yeah but that's only because you were throwing something gross, it made me throw up," I shot back.
"Throwing something"? He chuckles and I blush at my use of...vocabulary.
"Don't judge the way I talk," I scowl and smear some flour cross his face.
"Hey!" He smears flour on my cheek.
"Now you've done it!" I say and throw flour at him, before I know it we're running around the kitchen throwing flour at one another, laughter filling the kitchen. We stop when we accidentally throw it at the Mistress.
"Oh Mistress, I mean Hazel we are offaly sorry," I apologize as I grab a rag and go to wipe as much as I can off, but she surprises me by taking some off of her face and smearing it onto mine.
"You children have done it now!" She exclaims and now Elijah and I are trying to dodge Hazels flour attacks, and let me tell you that woman has aim!
"What is the meaning of this?" Master Williams asks and we all pause, we were having such a time that we didn't notice his arrival.
"So sorry Master Williams", I murmur and he smiles.
"Oh Eloise, there's no need to apologize and I'd tell you to call me James but you'd forget," he laughs and I laugh along with him.
"Now I have some business to finish up, but do carry on", he chuckles and heads towards his office.
"Now if you kids do not clean up, I will spank you like I did when you were little kids, you still are to me anyways, so with that said, clean!" She orders and we do as we're told. We smile as we catch glimpses of one another. I have to admit without Elijah here, today would've just been a simple day in the kitchen.
"Eloise! Is that a rag on your finger?!"
"Sorry Mistress it's just that-"
"Eloise!" She exclaims. I glare at Elijah, after all if it wasn't for him I wouldn't be rollin my eyes and thinkin: here we go again.
