Song: When we were young
By: Adele
---
After Mistress Hazel got my finger properly bandaged, we finish cleaning up, and preparing supper.
"You usually start throwing flour when in the kitchen? Speaking of which, when did you learn to cook, the Elijah I remember burned water." I laugh as we sit in the living room waiting for everything to fully cook.
"The Elijah you remember was a clutz and didn't know left from right," he laughs. "At School they taught us to cook and trust me in the beginning it was hard and I did burn water in case you were wondering," I chuckle. "But eventually I learned and perfected the art, because let's face it, I'll be living on my own for a while, which means I need to learn to fend for myself." He explains and I nod my head. I've been able to cook for as long as I can remember.
"What about you? The Eloise I remembered has always known how to cook, was always goofy, loved to play, and was always up for a challenge, so I know those things haven't changed, what do I not know about this new Eloise?" He asks and I find my smile slipping a little. There are a lot of things about the new me that I don't even like.
"Oh nothings new really, I'm the same Eloise just older," I plaster a smile that I hope is believable on my face but even now Elijah knows me. A familiar flutter that I haven't felt in years takes place in my heart as those hazel eyes look into mine.
"Eloise your smile doesn't reach your eyes anymore, the light that those beautiful brown orbs held, it's dull. You carry a weight that I can't even comprehend, you're closed off, something has happened," he whispers and I feel tears fill my eyes but I don't let them fall. I'm stronger than that, for Mama and Papa I shall stay strong. I only let myself cry once and I vowed since then that I won't let anything weaken me again. I will fight for my parents, for me, for all colored folk. This is a fight that I will win and crying, that's not going to help.
"Since when did you pay attention so closely," I joke. "Nothing happened Elijah I promise I'm fine," the dinger rings indicating that supper has finished cooking. I get up and Elijah gets up along with me, so does the Mistress and Master Williams. We head in and take everything out.
"If that is all Master Williams and Mistress Hazel, I'm going over to my own house for supper," I inform them and they nod.
"For the last time Eloise it's Hazel," she gives me a soft smile and I nod knowing that I'll once again call her Mistress and that it's not the last time she'll remind me.
"Can your family just come on over and eat along with us?" Elijah asks.
"Oh yes, that would be delightful," Mi.. Hazel says and Master Williams nods in agreement.
"Oh, I'm pretty sure they would love that but..."
"Why not just invite them over?" Elijah asks, interrupting me.
"They're usually very tired by the end of the day, so usually after dinner they like to relax a little but quickly go off to bed. You see they have to wake up early to work the next day," I explain and his eyes fill with sadness.
"Don't you at least get a day off?"
"They get two days off, and they either spend it tidying up the house or relaxing." I answer, purposely ignoring his question and they all nod. Elijah turns and looks at his parents.
"Why dont you just give the older colored folks easier jobs?" He asks.
"Son we do, its just they're worn down from years of work", he explains and I nod along with him, as Elijah looks at me for confirmation.
