Bunk Beds and Breakfast

Millie's P.O.V

Have I ever told you that I have a bunk bed? Me and Darry built it because I thought my room was too boring. Well, anyways, if more than one person ever needs to crash at our house, the person who gets there seconds just flops down on my bottom bunk. Unless it's Johnny, because we like staying up late and talking anyways, so he'd just head straight to my room (or I'd drag him there).

I leaned down over the top bunk, peering down at Johnny (or at least who I thought was Johnny, because I had just woken up and wasn't really paying attention) who appeared to be still asleep. I swung my legs over the top, planning on jumping down because going down the ladder is too boring, until I felt a hand grab me by the ankle.

Oh no-

I was yanked down before I could jump, and I shrieked as I was falling. I held my arms out and my hands smacked against the wood of bottom bunk, preventing me from hitting my forehead.

I heard a stupid cackle and immediately knew that it was Two-Bit. He must have convinced Johnny to move just so he could do that, because he knows I never use the ladder to get down.

"Man, Millie, and you looked right at me, too!" He laughed, grinning at me. I rolled my eyes and laughed along, inching my way to the ground, making sure I didn't kill myself in the process.

"Yeah, yeah, what'd you do with Johnnycake?"

"He's just in the living room. Didn't take much convincing to get him to move, poor kid hardly argued at all." He said, rolling out of bed the same way I had rolled off the couch. It made sense, what he said about Johnny. Johnny would rather die than argue with any of us, especially Dally. Johnny never really liked confrontation, but he still heard a lot of it, which was something we both had in common.

Two-Bit walked out of my room so I could get dressed, but really I was just deciding how I wanted to dress today. I usually preferred to wear skirts and t-shirts, which Steve said was a weird combination, but I didn't really care. On top of that, most girls wear heeled shoes, but I just wore white converse that I had painted dark green.

After I tucked my light green shirt into my dark green skirt (most of my clothes are green), I ran out into the living room, but stopped when I realized it was still dark outside. I looked at the clock and it was four in the morning. Johnny was curled up sleeping in the armchair, and Steve was laying on the couch. Two-Bit had already left- said something about shoplifting. He seemed to have a schedule in his brain as to when he wanted to do something illegal.

I found two blankets and tossed one over both of the boys, kissing them both on the forehead in the way I usually do. Ponyboy says I act like a housewife sometimes, but really I just try my best to show love to people who need it most. The boys in our gang are those people.

I vaguely wondered if I should start breakfast, since it was so early and it would probably be cold by time anyone woke up. I decided to wait until the sun came up, which meant I had time to kill. I'm a very impatient person most of the time, and there was nothing to do. So I just went outside and sat on the porch.

I must have started daydreaming, because before I knew it, the sun was peaking over the clouds. I watched the sunrise for a moment, appreciating the beauty of it. I don't watch sunrises as often as Ponyboy does- I almost never wake up early enough to do that. But I've watched the sunset with him plenty times. We both dig sunsets. I like them because when the sun is setting, she's saying goodbye to all her friends and allowing the moon and the stars to fill the sky, and it's a beautiful sight to see.

I decided to go in and start cooking breakfast. I made pancakes and eggs, because everyone loves pancakes and eggs. I checked the icebox to make sure we had chocolate cake, and when I saw we did, I got ingredients to make brownies. I'm the only one who much preferred brownies over chocolate cake, and although everyone thought I was crazy for it, it's still chocolate, so they couldn't be too mad at me. At least I wasn't like those Brumly boys who prefer vanilla over everything- how plain can you get?

While I was cooking breakfast, the house became lively, like it does every morning. I didn't pay too much attention to Darry and Soda running around and getting ready for work, because if I did I'd probably burn the eggs. I had the pleasure of babysitting Pony today, but I didn't mind, I liked spending time with him. Johnny would be with us too, and the more the merrier.

I guess I wasn't paying too much attention today, because things seemed to be going by a lot quicker. One moment I was watching the sunrise, the next I was cooking breakfast, and then everyone was sitting down and eating, and then I was watching as Sodapop, Steve, and Darry all left for work.

So now it was just me, Ponyboy, and Johnnycake. I clapped my hands together.

"Alright, boys, who wants to go do something fun?"
