W- What?
He felt thoughts rushing to his head as the words came out of his fake father like a disgruntled slow bear.
He tried to keep the thoughts out and just nod and say 'Oh, ok', but it was too strong.
If he's been lying about being my father, what other has he lied about!? What if my entire life is a lie, what if my Union is a lie, what if my destiny is a lie, what if-
Stop. Stop thinking these things. He's probably just joking! Or maybe he had been lying for a good cause! Just look at the bright side! He told you right? So it doesn't matter!
"Don't give me that look!" Father yelped.
Rivertail stiffened his face back to normal, not even noticing he was even making some kind of 'look'.
"I only told you that, because I didn't want you to look at me as some stranger who is using you."
But isn't that what you are? A stranger who has just been using me-
No of course not. I've known you since I was little, your not using me are you? You have done so much for me.
"Look, why don't we just forget about this alright?"
'Father' continued.
"It doesn't matter, I'm basically your father, since I'm the one who raised you your whole life."
More like a guardian.
Questions were bubbling up inside him, he stuffed them down, letting his father talk.
It felt like the wood floor, walls, and ceiling, was creaking more and more, as if it was trying to shout, "Hey hey! Look at me! I'm about to crush you all with wood!
He looked down at his talons, he didn't know if he could trust his supposed father's word anymore.
Father or, what ever is name was stared at him, and lifted a paw and circled it around his neck on the back.
"I know it's a lot to take in, but you have to trust me, the WhiteTails are your enemy not me."
That's true. See? Your reasonable. You had your reasons, and I have- mine- which are the same as yours but that's all right.
"Yes, I know that."
"But, er- what am I-"
"You can call me Navytail, that's my name", he answered before he could even finish, as usual.
"Oh, uumm cool name?", He said, hoping that was the right thing to say.
"Not really." Navytail said quietly fiddling with one of his tails.
The awkward silence after that made it feel like the world had paused, but it didn't give you a break, it kept making you think and think and think.
Navytail broke the silence and spoke.
"Your probably wondering where you came from right ?"
"Well- I mean uh- I didn't- You don't have to tell me if you don't want to," Rivertail responded, not meeting Navytail's eyes.
"Well, I tripped over you while I was..." He trailed off.
He was confused, surely Navytail had been thinking about this for a long time, how come he didn't have direct answer?
He was almost tempted to ask Navytail "was what?", but he kept patiently waiting for an answee.
"..Hunting.", Navytail said tapping one of his claws on the ground.
There was a small pause. Honestly, Rivertail did not feel completely satisfied with that answer. Also, that was a pretty short explanation with not much detail.
"Anyways, new discussion."
He still had many more questions, but if fa- Navytail wanted to change the subject, then he would.
"So, here's another big thing I need to tell you, and it's even bigger!"
Rivertail felt worry sweep over him. He started biting into a chicken, avoiding, all the bones and parts he didn't like.
Please don't be more lies. Please don't be more lies.
"Your gonna get to go to one of my meetings tomorrow!"
"W- meetings?"
"Oh right! I haven't told you yet. So, you know how it takes me so long to hunt?"
He hadn't been aware of that Navytail was aware of himself taking so long to hunt.
He nodded slowly, hoping Navytail wouldn't take it as an insult.
"Well, I don't just go hunting every morning..."
He could tell where this was going.
"I meet with some of the old BlueTail generals and advisers, and anyone else important every morning."
"But- thats- we split up! Our Union is divided now, how could you form any type of meeting-
"One day while I was hunting I ran into an advisor and a general, I figured it was my only chance to get help with my plan. We got a conversation going and I told them about my plan, the advisor didn't like it, but the general was all for it. We started meeting everyday to discuss the plans, and make changes and stuff to it. Some of the advisors want to "spare some WhiteTail lives" , I thought it sounded ludicrous."
Spare WhiteTail lives? He never thought of that, why would anyone wanna do that? They're evil, Aren't they?
"Today they told me they want to see the weapon tomorrow, which is why I told you I wasn't your father, because I would rather tell you personally than have it be revealed in the middle of a meeting."
Rivertail felt kinda glad now that Navytail had told him now instead of during the meeting, he would much rather do it personally as well.
But Rivertail still wanted to ask him why he never told him about these "meetings".
"I guess that makes sense."
"Well, then let's get to training, tomorrow you get to meet my friends."
The word 'friends' echoed in his head. He wondered if the important, glorious BlueTails at his meetings actually thought of Navytail as a friend, and not just another BlueTail who is gonna benefit them.
What are you thinking? Navytail knows exactly what he is doing.
