An Unfortunate Car Ride

(30 Minutes earlier)
I sighed. This was the worst. An hour earlier Poppop had decided to ditch town. We were going to my other grandparents house, there were no pictures of them. A sort of safe house. Sadly, they lived two states over and Poppop had insisted we not stay at any hotels and barely make any stops that weren't required.

No chances for him to take me.

Even though I insisted he would not take me unless I was asleep. It was all a part of the game and nobody likes a cheater.

I stared out the window. Goodbye sun, beaches, palm trees and fun. Hello rain, clouds, and cold. I took my last look at the beautiful ocean (actually, I'd still be seeing it. But it just wouldn't be the same.) and felt tears coming. I actually might've preferred that he'd just stay hidden forever.

I closed my eyes sadly. Night descended eventually and we drove in the dark. Our headlights didn't cut very deep into the darkness.

"Ah crap."

I turned to Poppop, "What?"

"We're almost out of gas. We haven't even been driving that long!" He shouted the last part, banging the steering wheel.

"Hmm. We gonna make it to the next gas station?"

"Yup." He glanced at me, "Get some rest. I know you're worried but I'm right here."

I nodded in defeat and closed my eyes. I got some much needed rest

Poppop's POV

I smiled, finally she had gotten to sleep. I was beginning to think if the bags under her eyes got any heavier, she might fall over.

I pulled into a Shell and sighed in relief. I was beginning to think we weren't gonna make it. I got out of the car and filled up, making sure to lock the car (I wasn't taking any chances). Swiping my credit card I swung the door open when all of a sudden, a voice came over the intercom.

"Sir, please step inside, your card has been declined." I frown. That can't be right.

"Sir, please." I stepped around the pump station and looked in the window of the little market. Sure enough a teenager (ginger, pinkish, DEFINETLY not Jeff) was waving me inside. I sighed and walked inside. Let's get this over with.

Walking thru the glass door, I heard the bell tinkling overhead. I sighed, "So it's denied huh?" I walked over to the counter.

He stared at me. And then he broke out into a smile. I glared, "What's so funny?"

"I'm sorry," he giggled, "Your friend came thru earlier and said for a joke to say your card was denied."

I turned white, "W-w-what friend?"

He chuckled, "You know."

I shook my head.

He frowned, "Jeff?"

My mouth fell open. I looked out the window, just in time to see a pale, monstrous face smiling and waving in my car window.

Driving away.
