Duck and Roll

Yup, something was definitely wrong here. I glanced at the drivers seat.

Yup, he was here.

I swore inside my head and closed my eyes. WTF do I do now?!?

I tried to calm my breathing. Maybe he thinks I'm still asleep. I could probably use that to my advantage. Probably not.

Oh shit, where's Poppop!?

Shhhhh, calm down Noel. He's most likely safe. If he had seen Jeff, he would've torn him a new one. Most likely, Jeff got him out of the car. Now, what about me?

Perhaps I could stab Jeff?!? With what, my seat buckle?! No. Maybe I could beat him up?!? And how would that work out exactly? No! Perhaps I could just stay asleep forever? That doesn't even... NO!!!

Perhaps I could jump out of the car?

You fucking idiot.

Then again, I might prefer dying at the side of the road than at the hands at Jeff. Let's call than Plan B.

A sudden jerk in the car snapped me out of the car.

...YES!!!

I fought hard not to grin. I knew that jerk, I've felt that jerk, I've seen that jerk!!! As a kid, I used to play guessing games in the car with Poppop. He'd ask me to close my eyes and guess what road we were on. Usually I got it wrong, but on this road there's a weird little bump that jerks the whole car. At least I knew where I was.

I fought hard against the smile. And I knew exactly what to do!!!

Very soon, we'll pass a very small cliff that ends in the water of the ocean. Around a bend, are the piers. We used to go swimming near here and sometimes we swam all the way to the pier for ice cream (my grandpa's hardcore!). If I get out of the car at the exact right moment, I might be able to land in the water. It'll hurt like hell but I'll live.

A slight swerve in the road.

...Now!

In one fluid motion, I unbuckled my seat belt, unlocked the door and flung myself out of the car (with enough time left to see the surprised look on Jeff's face).

I landed with a hard THUMP and rolled down the little hill, pretty soon landing in the ice cold water. Pain exploded in my side but I ignored that. I looked up to see the car screech to a stop and a very angry Jeff running out. Quickly, I flung myself even farther into the water, swimming for my life. I didn't slow down until my feet could no longer touch the ground. Glancing over my shoulder, I saw Jeff yelling obscenities at me before getting back in the car. I sighed and started swimming.

Jeff's POV

Fuck shit, that bitch!

I slammed my hand down on the steering wheel wincing at the pain that followed. How has she done that?!?

I gazed at the seat where my lovely Noel had been sitting. How long had she been awake?!? Long enough for me to feel like an old fool. I quickly pulled up to the side of the road before popping the hood. Everyone would be looking for this car and that was not an option.

I got out and bent over the engine, hood up. I poked and prodded random things, trying to look busy. Pretty soon a black Prius pulled up. A middle aged man got out. In the dark, I could see he was moderately handsome (disgusting to me, but I'm sure you'd like him).

"Car trouble?"

"Yup." I yelled back.

" Want me to take a look?"

"That would be nice." Huh. Weak.

He came over to stand by me. "So what seems to be the issue? Is it the-" I cut him off with a knife to the stomach. I grinned at the stunned look on his face.

"Actually, I think the problem is here," I stabbed him in the hand, "Here." I stabbed him in the back, "And definitely here." I ran my blade across his face. A beautiful smile. Now I like him. I let him drop to the ground before reaching into his blazer and pulling out his car keys.

Time to take things up a notch.

Poppop's POV

I swore lightly, kicking at the dusty ground. I walked with one hand in my pocket, the other outstretched with my thumb up.

Hitchhiking. If Noel could see me now, how she'd laugh.

The moment Jeff had left, I'd reached over to pull out my phone. Only to discover I'd left it in the car. Jeff had somehow cut all the payphone lines AND stolen the cashier's cell. Son of a bitch had only left me with one option. That's why I was hitchhiking, to get to the station.

I pulled my coat closer. It was late and I'd been walking for 30 minutes.

My heart lept as a car pulled up. FINALLY!

A window rolled down. A smiling pale face greeted me.

"Miss me?"
