“Barnicles, Waverly he saw you. He freaking met eyes with you. What are we going to do, what are we going to do?!” Arabella was saying to herself while swimming back and forth.
I was sitting in my large clam shell bed. Arabella was freaking out. On the inside I was too, but I couldn’t let anyfish know.
“We have to tell your father.”
“What the deep sea, NO Arabella. He’ll kill us. Specifically me. I’m on the last seaweed strip with him.”
“What are we going to do then?”
“We’re not going to do anything. It was only the one human that saw us right? If there was only one chances are the others will think he’s stupid.”
“You better be right. I never want to go back there and do that everever again.”
I wanted to go back. I wanted to look at the boy with the markings again. Something about him made me want more of him. I couldn’t quite put my fin on it though.
“I kind of wanted to go back tonight.”
“What?! NO!”
“You don’t have to come with me I can go by myself. I’m a big fish now.”
She glared at me. I knew she would come with me. She had to.
“We’ll go back out after my father comes in to say goodnight.”
Arabella just shook her head with a look of fear etched on her face.
Something in my gut was telling me something was going to happen tonight. I didn’t know if it was going to be a good thing or a bad thing. Quickly shaking my head I turned to Arabella. “You know the human that saw me. Did you see all those markings on his body? What do you call those?”
“I heard from Mishell that they are called oovoos.”
“If it’s from Mishell it’s probably wrong.”
Arabella rolled her eyes, “She’s your sister you should be nicer to her.”
“It’s hard to be nice to somefish as irrelevant as her.”
She just laughed back as a response. Knowing I won my case I swam over to my closet. I wanted to look nice tonight. Looking through my clam bras I decided on a cream one to match my purple tail. After I changed I swam over to my vanity and started to brush out my long, brown hair.
My hair was always a mess. The only thing I didn’t like about going to the surface was my hair drying, and it knotting all together. In the water I would just sway and move back from my face wherever I swam.
While I was looking in the mirror I caught a glimpse of my face. How I truly looked. I wasn’t pretty like Arabella with her long blond hair and hot pink tail. I was just Waverly. Nothing special.
While I was in midthought my father barged into the room.
“Goodnight you two. Don’t get into any trouble tonight,” he said while looking me in the eye.
He swam over and kissed the top of my head and then hugged Arabella. “You two stay here, don’t go anywhere. There are humans out swimming.”
“We won’t daddy.”
“Ok then good night girls,” and with that he left.
“How can you lie to his face like that?”
“It’s easy after a while….. Are you ready to go?”
She let out a long sigh. I took that as a yes and grabbed her hand leading her out of my room.
