“So….. Sleeping arrangements,” Arabella trailed out.
I knew she was going to question that. I figured we’d all sleep in my clam bed. It was rather large and could fit almost four mermaids.
“We can all sleep in my bed.”
Arabella warily looked at me with that look. The look that tells me no way in the deep sea she’d ever do that. I needed to not make her such a goody two fins.
“It’ll be fine tonight.”
I looked over at Harry. He looked nervous. Was he nervous to be sleeping next to us or just being a merman for a little bit? I quickly shook the thought out of my head. He’s probably still spooked from the whole human to merman thing.
“Alrighty then.”
I slowly got under my kelp covers. Harry slowly swam over and hovered down next to me. He seemed hesitant. Arabella took the other side beside me. Great, I was in the middle. I tilted my head to catch a glimpse of Harry. He was staring at my sand crusted ceiling. The way his dark eyebrows were furrowed led me to believe he was deep in thought.
I wondered what he was thinking about. Was he thinking about what was going on here? Was he thinking about mermaids? Was he thinking about dolphin nuggets? Was he thinking about me?
His head slowly turned to face me. He looked straight into my eyes. Nobody said anything. We just stared. It seemed like hours of not blinking, and just looking into each other’s eyes before Arabella made us jump, “Guys do you want to turn off the fish light?”
She was always a mood killer.
“Can we leave it on?” Harry asked quietly.
Arabella nodded her head before she turned her back and what I presumed was to try to fall asleep.
I looked back at Harry hoping we could still look at each other for a while longer. But he was turned on his side so his back was facing me. I huffed out a sigh.
I was on the brink of falling asleep when Harry whispered out, “W-waverly, what did you see that was good in me?”
I was startled by the question for a minute. I couldn’t place my fin on just what it was yet. The way he asked made me think he really wanted to know. Like he needed to know.
“I’m not sure, yet. I still haven’t figured it out. I’ll let you know when I do.”
I turned my head to see he had turned over and was intently looking at me. We locked eyes once again.
He smiled before looking away. Something about his smile made my tail flop. Just seeing him made me feel warm inside. I just hoped it would take a while for him to heal. I wanted to get to know him.
“What’s it like to live here?”
I looked at his face. Man that boy had some nice DNA.
“Well what’s it like to live on land?”
“It’s hot and cold. Sometimes water falls from the sky. And white powder called snow falls too. People really freak out when that happens,” he laughed to himself, “We have legs to travel on, but people invented other ways of transportation. We have cars and bikes and you know boats.”
“What do you like the most about your home?” I asked him when he paused.
“Um that’s a tough one. I think I loved my family. You know we have the same genetics and stuff. And my family and I were close before I got famous. I have a sister. It was just my mum, my sister, and me for a while. But I have a step father now. He’s pretty cool I guess…..”
He went on and on about them. I watched in admiration. We laughed and talked about our families all night until I was sure it was almost two am.
“I was only sixteen when I left them. I haven’t been back since then.”
“How old are you now then?”
“I’m almost twenty.”
I looked at him with wide eyes. He looked so much younger than that. Mishell was twenty two and looked like an old lady to me.
“How old are you?”
“Almost eighteen.”
He smiled to himself.
“Why are you smiling?”
“On land you’d be legal.”
“What’s legal?”
“How do I say this it’s when-“ Arabella cut him off.
“Would you guys shut up I’m trying to get some sleep here.”
What a mood killer.
