My thumbs rubbed against his scaley tail. I purposefully going slower than I could, so I would have more time with him. I knew we were close to the beach and this was the last time I would ever see him.

The water started to get shallower and shallower as we swam through it. Our tails started to graze the bottom of the sea floor and the tops of our heads started to peak out of the water.

“A few more tail flops,” Arabella said.

We stopped. This is as far as Arabella and I could go. I looked up and out at the beach. This would be the first time I ever saw a beach. It was nothing like I had imagined it to be. It looked like the floors of the sea without the water. I had anticipated something much bigger and better. I thought humans were extravagant with their homes.

“Are we just going to leave him on the beach?”

“We’re going to have to, Waverly. We have to hope another human finds him and takes him to get better.”

I stared out at the beach to see if there were any more humans out. I could only spot a few very far off in the distance.

My eyes started to feel funny. It was like a burning sensation, I had never felt before. Then something started to leak from them. I let one hand free from holding Harry’s shrinking tail to wipe away the mysterious substance.

“Arabella! My eyes are leaking!”

She sharply turned her to face me. She looked confused at first then realization struck her face. “Waverly, your eyes aren’t leaking.”

“Then what is happening?!” I was wiping away the liquid coming from my eyes.

“You’re crying.”

“But that’s something only humans do.”

She just shrugged her shoulders and smiled warmly at me.

Harry’s tail started to violently shake in between my hands. His legs were coming back. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Never in my life I had I seen anyfin like this.

I looked up at Arabella. I was scared. She looked scared too.

We hovered there in the shallow water while Harry was turning back into something that mermaids were supposed to never interact with. We had broke so many rules by doing this. We would never tell anyfish about this. This would just be a seacret between us.

The tears were falling from my face more often as his tail had already vanished.

“We need to push him up onto the beach.”

I wiped my runny nose and nodded. We swam forwards a little bit then pushed Harry up onto the sandy beach. We just had to hope someone would find him before the waves would bring him back into the ocean.

“Come on, Waverly. We have to go,” Arabella pulled me away as I just stared at his still body.

“No. Can we watch until someone comes and gets him.”

Arabella looked skeptical. But she saw the look of desperation etched on face and agreed, but only from a distance. We hovered there and I just watched him lay there.

I looked at his marking for the last time. Taking them all in. I would always remember the butterfly. The butterfly reminded me of what I needed most. It reminded me to be a child again. To remember the days when they were easier. It reminded me that I did have a sense of freedom when I felt trapped.

My dark sand colored eyes dragged up to his face. My mind would never be able to get rid of the striking seaweed green eyes of his. The way they would stare so intently at me. Like he was trying to read my mind. The eyes that would always spark the little fish in my stomach to swim in circles whenever he looked at me.
