It all started 20 years ago. I was starting on the force and was assigned to work at the homicide station in my city, Porto Velho, one of the main stations.
At the same time I did law school and was full of ideas and ideals. Like all young. And had a slim figure and well worked at the Academy. Outside, no one realized I was a COP, unless I say, what was rare. After all the more incognito, better to work.
At the beginning of the period my class did a work of Sociology that involved people abandoned by relatives, whether in hospitals or houses of support, even in less pleasant locations, such as street and that also involved children and would have to show also the work of society for these people and children were again included in all segments.
At the time the class was divided into groups and each took a job. The work of my group was dealing with abandoned children because of some kind of disease or infirmity. Including the special cases. This made me very happy because I've always been very fond of children and had a special fondness for the children who presented some disability.
There were no houses still specialized in taking care of these children. Simply were abandoned to fend for themselves, sometimes they were left at the door of any church or abandoned in an orphanage. In none of the cases was there a specialist to deal with the unhappy children.
And it was an absurd number of children who were abandoned. You have no idea how abandon children in this country. And the State does not yet have any work directed to this type of situation. Nor crèches and orphanages not prepared.
Anyway, we started our work and for this we started to relate with kids. We had to know the age, the type of problem and hopes of each.
Initially we chose House of Assistance Saint Rose, where were children of varying ages. Were special children. With some kind of problem.
Children with deafness, with problems in speech, and even with mental problems of different levels. The lack of love and knowledge of these parents did to these kids were abandoned to fend for themselves. It was absurd, but true. And even that caused some awareness, it wasn't enough that politicians create mechanisms so that the damage was minimal.
A couple of brothers soon attracted our attention and from that day on our work would be with them. Unanimous decision.
John had five years and wouldn't listen and didn't even talk. It was a nice little boy, dark-haired boy, but had green eyes and very much alive. The boy was very smart. He was very intelligent and curious.
John had an older sister, Dahlia, who was eight years old, also brunette and very smart. She had no problems, but not to separate her from the kid, Dahlia remained in home support. She was everything that the boy had and then not finished in time.
As he listened, Dahlia learned to communicate with sign language and was teaching gradually to John. It was very interesting to see both kids learning.
- Uncle Douglas, tell me what it's like to work in the police. Dahlia wondered. And I answered. It was very gratifying to see those eyes shine.
- When I grow up I'm going to work for the police as well. She always said, laughing heartily. – And I use gun also to arrest bandits who have around.
Even if they said it was dangerous to bully her. Had the fixed idea that would be a COP.
Then she made signs to John that he'd also like to hear stories I told of the arrests or the confusion that we used to see at the station.
Dalia and John's parents abandoned them when she was five and he was two years old. They were drug addicts and precisely for this reason that John was born with this disability. Dahlia was born perfect, but even so, when the parents are gone (or were in jail or dead-nobody knows to this day) children were found in the lobby of the House of Assistance, probably left by a neighbor or relative, there was no way of knowing, because both kids were asleep when they were left there. Nobody knew any relatives to be notified. And since then they are living in the House support. At least they're growing together.
It was also at this time that I met my wife. She worked in the House of Assistance Saint Rose as a psychologist. There was formed a year earlier and his thesis had been precisely the work on top of the abandoned children, how to make them grow without trauma.
Juliana had 25 years, light hair, been thin and strong, and even a bit lower than I, I have 1.70 m tall, his hair was short, and it was a marvel. Had freckles on face and dimpled cheeks and a smile that would melt anyone.
It was how much she liked children and this brought us together, because I always liked them. And it was she who referred to our group of college kids Dahlia and John.
- You're going to love these children. They are two angels who came from heaven to stay with us, and teaching what is true love. Will actually be enchanted. The John does not speak, but still cannot stand still and is very talkative, his way. And Dahlia is its shadow. Where one is, is the other.
And so we worked on that semester with the two children. Learn more from them than they are with us. End of semester, we present our work and our concerns, accompanied by studies and ideas that could be used retrospectively to help these and other children.
